Anthony's Story
After graduating from Malverne HS I attended Nassau Community College (NCC) on Long Island for two years majoring in accounting. Due to a schedule change with my part-time, after school job at A&S (remember them?) I dropped Accounting II and took a data processing class (one of my best decisions). After two years at NCC I transferred to Central State University in Ohio where Estill Covington ( Malverne '67) was attending.
Going away to college and staying on campus was great. Several of my dormitory buddies and I started a group called F Troop. We studied hard and partied hard. I and my roommate Dave Hubbard spent many extra hours in the school's computer room in the evenings playing around with an IBM 1401 computer (imagine only have 16k of memory!) with punched cards and a tape drive. We loved programming and honed our skills.
I was blessed to get a programmer trainee position with Chemical Bank on Wall Street six months before my June 1970 graduation. What a big difference it was from programming in college! account balances.
Kathleen Gooden (Malverne '67) and I married in October 1971 and have two great sons , Anthony II (38, teacher), David (35, Navy Chief Petty Officer).
I left Chemical Bank in 1973 and joined Manufacturers Hanover Trust (MHT) as a Senior Programmer in Personnel Systems (HR was not vogue then). I enjoyed a great career at MHT advancing to Vice President in HR Systems managing multiple departments and a large staff. With the merger of Chemical Bank and MHT (suddenly back with Chemical Bank), acquisition of Chase Manhattan Bank and JP Morgan & Company my departments played major roles in combining HR and Payroll applications of each bank. I'm glad the many late nights and weekends over the years are behind me now.
In August 2002 I decided to take a buyout and early retirement. Now, I enjoy spending time with my family, designing Web sites for local businesses in Georgia. I have a wonderful wife, Susan, and a young son Daniel (10 - not a typo) and six grandchildren, Malik (17), Naphiysh (14), Ananda (12), Yashua (8), Adam (3) and Seth (2) and another one due in October 2011. Life is a blessing!
