Anthony's Story

1948 - 1956: Epiphany Elementary School. God bless Sister Veronita IHM and all her buddies. I learned grammar and the music scales in spite of myself. 1956 - 1957: U of D High. Found out that I was genetically unfit for a Jesuit school. 1957 - 1960: Found out that Salesian H.S. was my home sweet home. Loved every single second, even those spent in jug. I must have learned something but it didn't feel like it. Since then: I have wandered like Odysseus and have returned to my island in the sky. 1960: Oblates of St. Francis de Sales - 6 years on the farm, at school, 3 years teaching math and science. Forcibly removed from OSFS for reasons of Gross Horniness. 1966: College at Wayne State in Detroit. Met my wonderful wife in a medieval French class (Thank you Fr. Fleck OSFS) 1968: Drafted into the US Army, but soon rejected because I was "...too fat to fight..." (Thank you Mrs. Mills) 1968: Began teaching English (Thank you Fr. Fahy) at Lumen Christi High School, Jackson MI, hired by Fr Coyle OSFS (He later told my mother that he never thought he ever made a mistake.) who was the principal. Starting salary: $5,500 per annum. 1972: Got a master's degree from Wayne State in English and Education. 1987: Quit Lumen Christi when told by Fr. Coyle that "...Tony, you don't need to worry about retirement...you'll die long before that." 1987: Started teaching at Western High School, Parma MI...Expand for more
. 1992: Won 1st Place Nationally in the Julia A. Moore Poetry contest which had over 1600 entries. The contest recognized the absolute worst poet in the country every year. Later,it was decided that I was so bad I should judge the contest. 1990: Bought a house on a channel leading to 17 miles of lakes and streams. We call it "Treetops". I learned quickly that boating is a sport for the very rich. 1994: Admitted as a Teaching Fellow of the "Third Coast Writers", Western Michigan University. 2004: Retired from Western High School, proving that Coyle was wrong - again. (Thank you Fr. Coyle) 2004 to 2009: Haven't done a damn thing with serious intent. I am listed as an "antique dealer and collector" by the State of Michigan Revenue Service, and as a result of which, I am forced to collect and repair and sell antique toy soldiers. Thanks to the many foolish yet impassioned old men who pursue this hobby, I have yet to make a cent (as far as the IRS is concerned). 2005, Fr. Andy Dunn OSFS hired me as his RCIA Director for Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was impressed by my resonant spirituality (In truth, I only fell asleep once during his sermons)and the fact that I said I'd work for nothing. Since then I have led dozens of lambs to the Light inspite of being a borderline heretic (Thanks Oblates!) 2005 and 2009 - Got new titanium hip joints! Love 'em! They're the best toys I ever got!
