Toni's Story
I've been in New Orleans since August of 1969. Graduated from LSU in 1973 with a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. Married in November of 1973, moved to Texas for a short while, moved back to New Orleans (alone) in 1975. Graduated from LSU again in 1984 with a Master's in Nursing. Worked as a nurse in various clinical, education, and management roles over the years. Joined the faculty at the LSUHSC School of Nursing in 2008 and retired in 2019 after 46 years as an RN. Married to Charlie Cascio since 1986, no children. We're both major dog lovers.
I stayed in New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina in 2005. As a manager, I was required to be at the hospital during the storm. My husband evacuated with our dogs before the storm hit and ended up in Texas at Linda (Mayo) Wilson's house. I joined him a few days later after we finished evacuating our patients. Charlie and I (and our dogs Ginger...Expand for more
& Sadie) spent 5 weeks at Linda's house. If anyone is ever faced with a catastrophe like this, I can only wish that you are as fortunate as we were to have friends like Linda and her husband Joe. I truly don't know what we would have done without them. Update: In August 2021, Charlie and I (with our cat Brees) evacuated to Linda's house AGAIN because of Hurricane Ida. Stayed 2 weeks and returned to New Orleans stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey, thanks to the marvelous food prepared by Chef Linda. I guess the time we spent in Home Ec rubbed off on one of us.
Charlie and I love to travel (though we have little time to do it), eating at the wonderful restaurants in New Orleans, and having fun with our friends from the Knights of Babylon, one of New Orleans oldest Mardi Gras krewes. We've both survived COVID-19 and plan to keep it that way. Hoping for better times as we approach 2022!
