Antonio's Story

In the event someone is actually interested and at the suggestion of another classmate I ran into who probably wished I had written my back story instead of telling him directly I post here my progress since leaving A&D, where I was in the architecture program. After high school I went to Cooper Union and while in college got married. This marriage ended about the time I finished Cooper. I don't think these two milestones were related however. I then worked for an architect for 2 years in NY and went back to college and got a masters in planning from Columbia. I was hired from Columbia to work as a planner in Spain with a very eccentric well known architect in Spain. I worked with the team doing a planning project in the canary islands. I came back from college to NY when it was about to go bankrupt. Given that there were no jobs and that I had no money I decided to do the only logical thing, start my own firm in the Bronx where I grew up. I started the firm with a fellow who I met when I was working my first job. The firm was Sanchez and Figueroa and we did some nice things and got up to 18 people at one time. During this time I met my second wife and after a long courtship eventually got married and had 2 kids. However, neither Pat (my business partner) nor I were businessmen so the recession in the late 80’s and early 90’s was in full swing we were struggling again and he and I were no longer in the same vibration. In this turmoil out of the blue I was recruited to work in the city also by a guy I met on my first job. This was a fancy position with a big title “deputy commissione...Expand for more
r for the department of correction”. Despite the bleak picture corrections brings up it was actually a great job and I really enjoyed it. In the end I left it due to internal politics. After that I eventually got a job working as a construction manager for large consulting firm doing a large rehab project in Brooklyn. They (tetra tech) eventually decided they didn’t want to work in NYC so I left and then came to my current job working again as an architect with Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects. In this job I spent a little more than three years in Calcutta working on the design of the Calcutta metro. India is an extraordinary place but also very difficult but I am very glad I had the opportunity to work there. . During my time in India my second marriage finally dissolved but fortunately after my children were grown. although I am not a grandfather as it turns out many of my classmates are two of my younger siblings have a total of six grandchildren between them. It seems my kids are particularly picky which I don't think they got from me. I am not considering retiring as I don't know what that really is and I still have a job. Also because Florida and the Caribbean are having way too many hurricanes and due to climate change my apartment in Manhattan may soon be waterfront property. I hope those of you with nothing to do that have enough time to read something like this were engaged. However if you did read this it will be clear by now that you need to get more interesting and engaging activities than what you just spent the last 20 minutes doing. I just not a constructive use of your time.
