Antonio(Tony)'s Story

Life: J. Antonio G. López, MD, FACC, FAHA, FACP, FCCP, FASE, FASA, FNLA, FASH, FASPC J. Antonio G. López, MD, is Clinical Research Medical Director, Cardiovascular and Metabolic Therapeutic Area, Global Development at Amgen. He was most recently Cardiovascular Medical Director US Medical Organization and US Medical Organization CV Medical Advocacy Relations Lead at Amgen. He is a cardiologist, lipidologist, and hypertension specialist. Prior to joining Amgen in 2014, he was with Saint Alphonsus Medical Group Heart Care in Boise, Idaho. Dr. López was Director of Preventive Cardiology and CV Rehabilitation, Director of the Lipid Clinic, and Director LDL Apheresis Program at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. He also served as Chair of Cardiology at Saint Alphonsus. In addition, he was the Chair of CV Research and Education, Director of the Hypertension Consultation Service and Director of the Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) Program at Saint Alphonsus Medical Group Heart Care. His previous experience includes serving as Director of the Lipid Clinic and Director of CV Outpatient and Outreach Programs at the University of Iowa and Director of Cardiac Care and the Coronary Care Unit at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. He was also Medical Director of Preventive Cardiology, CV Rehabilitation, the Lipid Clinic and Prevention Center at the Prairie Heart Institute in Springfield, Illinois. He has previously served on the faculty at the University of Iowa, the University of California at San Diego, and Southern Illinois University. He was a lecturer at Boise State University. Dr. López received his medical degree Cum Laude from Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he received the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Merit Scholar Award. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was a Research Fellow in the cardiac unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He went on to complete a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional cardiology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. At the University of Iowa, Dr. López demonstrated that vascular responses to activation of platelets and leukocytes are greatly exaggerated when monkeys develop atherosclerosis. He studied mechanisms that produce contraction of vessels by leukocytes in atherosclerotic arteries and the role of complement. Because leukocytes and platelets play a key role in atherosclerotic arteries, these studies have important clinical implications. Dr López then demonstrated that, when hypercholesterolemia was treated and atherosclerotic lesions regress, hyperresponsiveness to vasoactive products released by leukocytes and platelets subsides. he Alfred Soffer Research Award from the American College of Chest Physicians, the National Trainee Award from the American Federation for Clinical Research and an Associate Investigator Award and the Merit Review Award from the Veteran’s Administration. Dr. López also received the UCSD Chicano Alumni Association Recognition Award for exceptional contribution to the field of Medicine in 2001, the President’s Service Award from the Pacific Lipid Association in 2014, and the Amgen Spirit of the US Award-Courage in 2016. In 2018, Dr. López received the Physician of the Year Hispanic Health Leadership Award National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), the Cardiovascular Medicine Distinguished Alumnus Award at The University of Iowa, and the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus Award for Achievement. Dr. López is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the National Board of Echocardiography, and the American Board of Clinical Lipidology and a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension as recognized by the American Society of Hypertension. He is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Cardiology, Physicians, Angiology, and Chest Physicians. He is also a Fellow on the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, the Council of Epidemiology and Prevention, and the Council of Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association. He is an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Dr. López is a founding member of the Board of Directors and Past-President of the Pacific Lipid Association. He was previously on the membership, health quality and research committee, practice management committee, communications committee, and was Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee of the National Lipid Association. Dr. López was also previously the Chair of the task force for underserved populations of the National Lipid Association. He is a Fellow of the National Lipid Association, the American Society of Hypertension, and the American Society for Preventive Cardiology. Dr. López has also served as a member of the Epidemiology and Prevention Council Minority Committee of the American Heart Association. Dr. López served as Councilor and the Secretary/Treasurer of the Idaho Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. He was on the Board of Directors of the Idaho Division of the American Heart Association and the Board of Directors of the National Lipid Association. He was also a member of the expert panel of the National Lipid Association Recommendations Part 2 panel. Dr. López has authored 70 abstracts, 56 peer-reviewed papers, 33 review articles, and 12 book chapters. He has provided over 775 scientific presentations. Dr. López was previously on the Editorial Board of Diabetes Forecast, the Health and Wellness Journal of the American Diabetes Association. Dr. López also served on the Editorial Board of the journal Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, and Section Editor, Current Atherosclerosis Reports, for Rare Diseases and Lipid Metabolism, and a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.
