April's Story
Life
I attended King 89 - 93 but I didn't graduate from there. I was more interested in cutting class than studying. In November of 93 I stumbled into the Marine Corps recruiters office at Broad and Stenton. I had not interest in joining but my friend and I thought it would be a good idea to go mess with the Marines (yet another testimonial as to why you shouldn't get blunted!) Long story short, I tested very high, got $40,000 towards college and a four year contract a Marine. Since you can only go into the Marine Corps as a high school graduate they put me into a school called Philadelphia Regional High School. I finished with my credits by mid December (I only needed a couple) and was off to bootcamp in Paris Island, South Carolina before Christmas. I had to go to 29 Palms, California for a year to complete my Military School (Super High Frequency Radio Repair Tech...2831.) That was where God blessed me with my wonderful Husband to be. I finished military school and got stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. I ran all Marine track for a few seasons. While in the Marine Corps I studied nursing and ended up EMT certified. I changed my major to math to move into engineering. I got married in 1997 and moved back to 29 Palms with my husband. We moved to Okinawa, Japan in 1998. That is where I got my BS in Accounting in 2000 (yes, changed majors again) and had my son in 2002. Thank God I was in the military...they got to pay for all that indecisiveness about my major, books and all! While in Japan I h...Expand for more
andled some large Marine Corps Communitly Service accounts, supervised the back room operations of Bank of America and was Chief financial officer for a great church there. No, it was not all at the same time. I learned to speak Japanese fairly well (which thanks to Japanese daycare was the first language my son spoke in. A Japanese friend of mine had to tell me he could talk.) At night I also taught English to Japanes students. In 2004 our family moved to Cairo Egypt (If you're planning a vacation, that's the place to go...amazing!) I taught 8th and 9th grade math there for the 2004/2005 school year. When the school year was over I got a job as a secretary at the embassy. That was also a wonderful experience. I worked for the Charge' (the guy in charge when the Ambassador is away), and the Economic and Political Offier, and the Counselor for Public Affairs. I took a job at USAID after that as a, you guessed it...voucher examiner. Can't get away from that money! I learned Arabic on a very basic level. My son speaks it more fluently thatn I do. We moved to Helsinki, Finland January of 2006 where I had my second son. We moved to California after that where I had my daughter and started a daycare. Now, I'm settled in Georgia and I'm a stay at home mom and wife! All I can say is thank God for taking this young, foolish, high school dropout pothead and changing my life for the good. I can't imagine what kind of life I could have ended up living but God didn't mean it to bo so. Thanks for reading. April
