April's Story
My parents decided to move from Chicago to Schaumburg my junior year of high school. I was not happy to leave Kelvyn Park. Schaumburg was just beginning to develop; the population in 1963 was 3,300. There was no high school in Schaumburg; therefore, I had to take a school bus to Palatine. I think the bus picked us up around 6:15 in the morning, I remember it being dark waiting for the bus. Changing schools at age 16 is certainly not much fun. Somehow I survived, graduated and went on to SIU-Carbondale, then UW-Madison. From 1969 to 1973 I travelled extensively in Europe and Asia. I returned home with a French husband (divorced after 7 years). My daughter was born in Goa, India in 1972. I worked for over 30 years for the Illinois Depart...Expand for more
ment of Mental Health, first as a Caseworker and then as an Administrator at Elgin Mental Health Center. I spent the last 20 years of my career monitoring Community Mental Health Agencies in the Greater Chicago Area. After my retirement from the State, I worked for 7 years as a consultant for Community Mental Health Agencies. Since retirement we have travelled to France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Mexico, the Caribbean and various parts of the USA. We live close to our two grandchildren and volunteer at their school and sports events. I am very fortunate to be healthy and happy at this stage of my life. It is hard to believe that 50 years has gone by since high school graduation.
