Areatha's Story

College I went to Trenton State College directly out of high school. I roomed with my BFF from high school, Michelle Hayes, during my freshman year. What an experience! Being best friends does not mean you should be roommates. Sophomore year, I wised up, roomed with a girl more like me on the social end, and began enjoying life, while still maintaining my friendship with my freshman year roomie/best friend. I broke up with my high school boyfriend and began pursuing interest in college boys. That was fun! I joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. during my sophomore year and began to take on a whole new dimension to college life. My classes became harder. I became stronger educationally. I developed into a campus leader...writing for the campus paper and a magazine devoted to the African American community on campus. I was IGC VP. I worked in the Student Center, first as a Bldg Asst, then as Office Asst. I worked the summer of 91 for CMS, and that's where I met my hubby. I got pregnant during my senior year, and came back to school as a RA at Decker. I only lasted one semester. I graduated Dec 92 and came back to participate in the commencement ceremonies in May 93. I had lots of good friends, Kyle Johnson, Yolanda Walker (now Wills), Regina Brown, Michelle Hayes (my high school BFF & freshman year roomie), Stephen Davis, Hendrickx Toussaint, and Cherie Hopkins (now Washington), and I can honestly say that I'm still in touch with all of them. It feels good to connect! Some college regrets...Al and Jason during freshman year...need I say more...lol...Also, wish I would have finished my minor in Criminal Justice. Dr. Walsh was a really cool professor...an easy A. Dr. Anntarie Lanita Sims was my all-time favorite professor. She made me think. She made me work. She was my Advisor. I love her, and I'm still in touch with her. When completing my masters degree thesis, I had to find a faculty member to serve as my mentor and guide through the thesis. This person would be my first reader, and would need to make sure I was kept on track. I couldn't think of anyone better than Dr. Sims. She agreed. She helped me immensely. I enjoyed my Africana Studies courses, especially with Dr. Evans, the Phi Beta who was cool as ever. I took Images of the Black Man in American Film with Prof. Evans, and that was probably my 2nd favorite course as an undergrad (second to Interpersonal Comm). I still have the book - Toms, Coons, Mulatt...Expand for more
oes, Mammies and Bucks by Donald Bogle. Love that book! It chronicles the Negro in film from the earliest of stages - Birth of a Nation - through the 90s. I even enjoyed Dr. Chukumba's courses, though most times I couldn't understand what he was saying...Dr. Dickinson's classes were cool, too. I still have the books from her course - History of the Black Woman. One of those books is on my all-time favorite books list - When and Where I Enter by Paula Giddings. Well, that's it for my college years. Workplace I've been working in academic advising at Excelsior College for over 16 years now. It's a different type of college in that it's an external degree program. Non-traditional sources of credit are accepted towards degrees without qualification. I hardly see students. Advisement is done primarily through email and over the phone mostly, and sometimes through letter and fax. I've had the occasion to meet students at graduation which is held once a year, here in Albany. About 3 years ago, I was promoted to the Academic Evaluation Specialist position - files for all students pursuing a Liberal Arts degrees must be approved by me before graduation. There's a lot of pressure to make sure things are accurate. It's rewarding work, but it's also tedious and very detail-oriented. I enjoy my work immensely. Home Life I am married to the wonderful, sexy, cool Jeff S. Fryar, and we have two great children - Khira, who is almost 17 and graduating from high school in June (2010), and Jeffrey, Jr. who is 11 and in the 6th grade. My children are my pride and joy. I live through them. They both have many of my personality traits. It's cute but also so annoying. When they act like me I can't do anything but shake my head...LOL. We live in Albany and I like it here. They say it's boring but I'd rather be here than in Jersey City. I can never go home again...too much pain. I do get to visit occasionally as I still have friends there, and my sister just moved from the area recently. My younger sister DB lives in Somerset, so I do get down to visit NJ a few times a year. I have two older sisters who live in Newark, and I see them occasionally, too. My family all separated and most left NJ after my brother Michael (aka Trouble) was killed. The memory was really painful and we all wanted a fresh start. My mom lives in Georgia now and though she's far away, I'm in touch with her more than I was when she was still in Jersey. I love my family.
