Arlen's Story

After graduating from MCHS, I attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University or CMU) in Pittsburgh, graduating in 1969 with a BS in electrical engineering. In 1968, I married Mary Szaniszlo, my high school sweetheart and fellow MCHS graduate. Following commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant from ROTC at CMU, I served in the Army for a little over 7 years, including a tour in Viet Nam with two periods as a signal company commander. I left the active Army in 1976 and joined the Civil Service in San Diego as a project engineer for the record communications system on the Navy’s Nimitz-class nuclear carriers. Later I was stationed in Arlington, VA as project engineer for the development of all Marine Corps Signals Intelligence and Electronic Warfare systems. I left the Civil Service in 1983 and joined Sanders Associates (later a Lockheed Martin company) in New Hampshire first as a Systems Engineer, and progressing as Hardware Manager, Deputy Program Manager, Program Manager, Engineering Manager, and finally Manager of Advanced Programs. I left Sanders in 1991 to join another Lockheed Martin company in Dallas, initially as a Systems Engineer and later a Project Manager on the superconducting magnets for the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory (SSCL). When the SSCL was terminated, I joined Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and later a division of Ralph M. Parsons, Architects and Engineers for a short time working on the nuclear cleanup at the Hanford Nuclear site. Shortly thereafter, I rejoined another Lockheed Martin company at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), first as an Engineering Fellow and later as the Chief Systems Engineer and Director of Systems Engineering. I left INEL and returned to Lockheed Martin at their Missiles and Fire Control Division in Dallas. During my career, I was fortunate to have worked on many advanced foreign and domestic systems including magneto hydrodynamic power, superconduct...Expand for more
ivity, satellite, tactical intelligence, air and missile defense, and robotic systems as well as the Electronic Warfare system on the F-22 Raptor (Advanced Tactical Fighter). Mary worked at many of these same companies as a Configuration Manager. I was also fortunate to have worked with organizations in Scotland, Korea, Taiwan, and France during my career. Mary and I have one son, now a commercial airline pilot with Alaska Airlines and living in Spokane, WA, one grandson, and one great granddaughter. Mary and I both retired from Lockheed Martin in 2003 at age 55, sold our house just south of Dallas, bought a 40’ diesel motor home, and traveled the country making an annual, 8000 mile loop around the US seeing the sites, visiting friends and family, and spending summers on Flathead Lake in Montana and winters in Texas and Florida. Mary passed away in 2010 and I continued traveling until early 2017 when I bought a home in Deland, FL. I only travel around the southeast US now to visit friends and family. My grandson committed suicide in 2017 and his daughter (my great granddaughter) was adopted by my son. This profile is probably longer than it should be, but I wanted to share my good fortune and the opportunities I have had in my life with my MCHS classmates. I am thankful for the foundation that was provided by my experience at MCHS and the education and guidance provided by all of my instructors. I am especially thankful for my electronics program instructors, Mr. George Speers and Mr. John Davis for the extensive background in electronics they provided, and to Mrs. Tannenbaum (Mrs. “T”), later to be Mrs. Glasser (Mrs. “G”) for her “direct, old-school” approach to teaching as well as her career guidance. I hope my classmates feel the same way about their experience at MCHS and have also had good fortune and opportunities in their careers and lives. It’s unfortunate that the Miami-Dade education system has lost this valuable institution and its quality instructors.
