Arlene's Story

As of June 16, 2022, I am retired from teaching. I'd been teaching since 1990: reading to grades 1-3, regular classroom grades 4 and 5; changed to high school and have taught computer applications, graphic design, internships, US history, world history government, economics, and AVID. I was back in elementary for my last teaching years until I retired in 2022. I've enjoyed teaching 3rd grade for the last several years and a 4/5 before that. . I have two adult sons in their 40s and a third "son by another mother" family friend. (His parents moved from San Diego to Lancaster after the boys got out of high school--I'm Mom2.0) One son is married and they have told me that they do not intend to have children, so no grandkids on the horizon. I do, however, have 2 grandkitties, both cats are 11 or so. A third one died last year, 2022. From Anaheim High, I went to San Jose State where I earned my BS in Business--guess that makes me officially able to spew BS. Married in 1976. Stayed in the SF Bay area until 1985 when we moved to San Diego. After college, I worked in the electronics industry in Silicon Valley in production control and then purchasing, 1974-1985. Went to National University in San Diego for my teaching credential and master's. I've been teaching since 1990. Dick and I divorced after more than 20 years of marriage. Eventually he moved to AZ. this in August 2016 and February 2023. A lot changed in my life. While my birthday is in August, I now have a second one--March 26. I had a heart attack from an overstressed heart muscle and went into an 8-day coma, heart and respiration stopped several times. Life has not been the same since. A year later, I had open-heart surgery to repair a torn heart valve. I have ongoing heart failure. In addition, pulmonary problems more than my usual asthma, COPD, GERD, make life a challenge to keep on breathing. Ever since COVID-19, my usual coughing spasms--which happen 4-8 times a day and throughout every night--cause people to look at me as a walking COVID germ. I have not yet had COVID and hope to continue that. I have had all the vaccines. So, between heart failure and pulmonary issues, my health is an ongoing contest between breathing and energy. Breathing usually wins. When energy does, I pay for it for the next few days. My DVR is certainly getting a workout. And I'm grateful to be able to stream movies and shows through Netflix, YouTubeTV, and Amazon Prime. Looking forward to our class reunions. Hope to see you then. Unbelievable how the time has flown. Unfortunately, I missed the 2021 50+1 reunion; I was in the hospital the day before and not well enough to make the trip from San Diego. I'm hoping to be around for another one, perhaps 60th?
