Life
Note: For my friends from Scales Elementary and McKemy Junior High, who knew me as the band-geek, Chris Powell, my step-father adopted me and I became Chris Armstrong, the band-geek, when I went to Mesa High.
I went on to continue my band-geek apprenticeship at Mesa Community, then at CalArts where I got my BFA and MFA in music (of India and Africa mostly). Did some Ph.D. coursework in Ethnomusicology at UCLA and studied a bit of Afro-Latin music at Cal State LA. Over the last 25 years I've had 7 surgeries for neck injuries (the most recent one 2 months ago) and a couple of "syndromes" in my arms and hands that have slowed up my drumming career a lot. hen I couldn't drum for medical reasons.
Now,(2006) I'm a professional band-geek in Los Angeles with my amazingly supportive and all-around wonderful wife Mary - of 20 years (no kids...yet!?!) - where I perform mostly African music, teach a bunch of students, compose music and sadistically difficult drum ditties, record for TV, Disney, etc. and do spooky musical "atmospheric" designs for a TV/independent film composer.
I'm also working on a new (dare I say REVOLUTIONARY?) kind of drum design that will "shock the drumming world" and shake the "soulless minions of orthodoxy" from their somnambulistic complacency. Bwaaaahaahaaaaa. [wrings hands with a fiendish grin and a disturbing look in his eyes].
