Arnold's Story

Life truly began after graduating from Pitt in French and Italian Literature. I went to Africa as a member of the Peace Corps to "see the world" AND to see if my education in the French language would amount to anything practical other than teaching high school French in Pittsburgh. In Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, our group of forty volunteers were the first ever to be trained in country. I was placed in the Merchant Marine academy in the capital to teach sailors, navigators and captains. It was great fun and every boys' dream to be in the harbor sailing into the sunset while teaching maritime English in French. Summer vacations were spent traveling all over West Africa by train, truck, boat, raft, plane, horse carriage and even camel ..Sadly a lot of those places I visited then would be dangerous to revisit today. I could never have imagined living in the very heart of cosmopolitan Dakar. My apartment had all the modern conveniences even a garbage chute and elevator. So, after two years of this "bourgeois life style" (Remember, I was a naive French Literature major who wanted to be a rough and tough Peace Corps volunteer.) I wanted a change of life style at a slower pace and in a quieter place. I was able to move to Bignona (not even one traffic light in the whole town). Yes, life was great in the tropical Casamance region. I thrived in the lush south with its deserted beaches, trails that meander through friendly villages and picturesque rice fields framed by palms, mangoes and guavas trees . I could have vegetated there for a long time.. But enough was enough. After four years of fun mastering Wolof (the national language) in the capital and Jolla (the language of the largest ethnic group in the Casamance), it dawned on me (duh) that my linguistic abilities were not limited to just Romance languages and its aromatic women. So, I decided to study linguistics in graduate school. This way I could follow the endless summer either in the middle east, South America or in Africa again as a language teacher But fate ...(there is no such thing as coincidence) .. had other plans for me. Because of an ill-fated close cultural encounter of the worst kind, a totally mystifying Japanese girl in grad school drew me to Tokyo. I just had to figure out what made this enigmatic chic tick. She had more layers than an onion and I tried to peel my way done to the core! I gave up when all I was left with just shriveled up pieces. Blooming onions in the outback are much more satisfying. Little MS. Kansai Perplex stayed behind in the States and taught at the University of Oregon unti...Expand for more
l her demise from what I perceived to be a stress induced cancer brought on by a discriminatory lawsuit involving her department and resulting in super big bucks in settlement of which she was stuck paying a considerable sum . I wish I could have settled our score before she passes away . In a more than ironic twist of fate, I did a role reversal and teach at a university in Tokyo. (Yeah, that dude, Fate was laughing in my face.) Check out my school, Nishogakusha University. The site is nishogakusha-u.ac.jp. I have been here now for almost 30 years as a Professor of English Language Studies...more than half my life..I have a real honey of a wife, a cinnamon girl. She works in a private missionary school. Mom didn't care she wasn't Catholic because she sure is sweet! A hard headed Reformed Presbyterian woman who changed my life.Keeps me on my toes without stepping on them. I also have two drop dead gorgeous bilingual/bi cultural daughters who live and study in the US. I would like to see them study in Italy/ Europe but that's my wish.. not theirs. As a family, we have traveled extensively in the USA as well as Asia and Micronesia and toy with the idea of retiring in Bali, Malaysia or Thailand (great food and culture). Last summer my wife and I went for a second honeymoon to Italia. Her second trip and my fourth. Spent a month and saw the big three, Florence, Rome and Venice and then went south to Capri, Sicily and Calabria. Now I am thinking to spend at least a couple months there every year after retirement but most likely the rest of the year in Hawaii.. We have a condo # 206 at White Sands village in Kona, Hawaii. Google it through the Grandwelcome Vacations web site /Condos/ WhiteSands 206/ Let us know if you want to stay there. We will give you a very attractive discount. Never thought I would be an expatriate but here I be! What a long strange road it's been. I just keep on trucking.. As a follow up to my last blurb, I retired after 33 years with the title of Professor Emeritus from Nishogakusha University in 2020. I am working two more years as an adjunct at Seikei University the alma mater of the former assassinated Prime Minister SHozo Abe. I am also a grandfather to a bright little four year old boy who at this point is trilingual. English inmput from my daughter and her husband and my wife . Japanese from my wife and daughter . I do my part in Italian through translation. Now we have a sweet little two year old grand daughter named, SORA which means Sky. Her brother is Kai, which means the sea in Japanese. Not sure what the future hold in store...
