Art's Story

Life Went to Southwood, then Heyl Ave,4th to 6th grades. Lived at Crystal Swim club during the summers, from 1951 to 1957, and Rollerland skating rink from 1953 to 1957 on Fri Nights, with lots of Saturdays and Sundays thrown in. Lived 22nd St and Thurman from 1940s to 1960. The wrong side of the street so had to go to Roosevelt Jr. Everyone else went to Barrett. Suspect this is why I never fit in at South. Was asked to leave mid-year 1957, due to too many run-ins with "management" and left behind 275 detentions plus indefinite. Went to Central High School Vocational Automotive, where I graduated in Jan 1960. Married 1961,Rebecca Goodwin from East, who I met at Rollerland. 2 children. Christie,South High c/o 1980 and Charles who did not graduate (Class of 1983) Worked in Automotive field as mechanic, later, as a Service Manager, and ran several repair shops for local Import car dealerships. Part owner of Gran Prix of Columbus, an Import repair shop, for 2 years,1969/70. Later had own business Foreign Affairs Import Car Service for 12 years,1981/93. Employed Ohio Auto Club (AAA) as Fleet Maintenance Supervisor/Tech, 1995-2005. Spent 11 years in amateur road racing as a mechanic and later 3 years as a Crew Chief for Mazda RX7 owned by Red Roof Inns. Traveled Eastern US, and California. Went short track stock car type racing as a mechanic starting 1984, later had my own race cars (total of 5), with people driving for me. Spent time as Competition Director with ARCA (4th largest stock car sanctioning body in the US) for my old group of cars, touring the mid-west. My wife, Becky, was also an official, a Pit Marshal, and she was a delight to see her handle some "Hot" drivers. Retired from racing in 1997. However, not being really smart, and missing racing, joined Wing Sprints on Asphalt as asst. Technical Inspector for 2003. Due to old age, and no sleep during the week as 3rd shift worker, I retired again from racing at the end of 2003 season. Currently 3 grand kids by daughter, Great Grand Son born Jan 2004. Great Grand Daughter born Apr 2010 4 cats, 2 dogs. Sadly we've lost several over the years, due to age and disease, but never go without. Currently, 2022, we have our last 2 dogs, going on 10 years old. Too old to properly raise more puppies, Hate knowing I'll have no more dogs, will get a Maine Coon cat to have a large cat. Still live on Southside, Bought a house in 1965, 2 1/2 blocks East of where I lived in 1945. Was looking toward retirement,(Oct 28, 2005) and doing English Import repairs for extra bucks and fun, and auto projects for myself. Got my garage all ready to go, new furnace, insulated roof, AC, satellite TV, surround sound. Will change careers, maybe, when I retire or stay in the auto field to work 2 or so years, just to have no bills when I quit work for good. 2002 Heart attack and a few months later diagnosed Diabetic Type II. Blame it all on the 3rd shift, and resulting weight gain. Topped out at 183! Porker! Slipped disc in 2004. What a "pain". LEFT WORK, Oct 28, 2005, 3:10 PM and moved on in my life. Spent 1961 to 1995 in the Import Car repair field, 1995 to Oct 2005 with Ohio Auto Club (AAA) and have to afford Insurance for my wife Becky, till her medicare kicks in, so since I love Volvos (have had several and 1 is in my garage right now) I'm off to be a plain old Volvo Technician. No more worrying about 36 trucks and 60 some drivers (in my old job), and will have a fine time caring only in what I do. Plus my new job is so much more fun, am really happy to go to work, and am sure this has added years to my life. Pension, + SS, + new job money, I'll be OK and better off than I thought. END OF YEAR 1, Oct 31, 2006, retired but working full time at my old profession, Auto Technician. Steep learning curve getting back in the "Game". I work at a Volvo dealer, and ...Expand for more
it's been both fun and aggravating learning something new every day. Some of the cars I work on have 12 to 16 computer-controlled systems and more computer power than most desktop PCs. The plus side is I'm physically stronger than I was 10 years ago, with bending and lifting all day. 20 more pounds to lose from my fat storage areas, and I'll be good to go. Thought I could "grow up" a little, stop buying cars, but failed, bought 3 this past year. July 2011, 2009, got dumped from my Volvo job. Knew it was coming, due to new owners, I didn't care. Got a job as a Security Guard. Had fun for 1 1/2 years. Too much a "people" person, which isn't allowed if you are a Guard, so early 2010, out the door I was sent. 3-month vacation and got bored. Found a fun job at a Fiat restoration shop, now a mechanic again. Then the company racecar mech left, and now I do the race engines for both company cars, + customer work. Odd to be Crew Chief again, after so many years. Health good, except for Arthritis creeping in. Weight down to 174, what I was 15 years ago, Diabetes doing fine. Wife, Becky, is also fine. Nov 2011. Diabetes doing better, and new meds I'm down to 160, same as 1974. As company race team mechanic, we got 5th place at the SCCA National Championships, my best, so far. 2012 will be better. END OF 2014, guess old age caught up with me, along with a major illness. Still at my Fiat restoration play job, part-time. Better condition at my age than others, still have some hair and most of my teeth. LOL. However, I have been losing weight in small amounts since 2002, when I was pretty fat, and mentioned this to my Doc. He scheduled me for testing, as my weight loss was 30 pounds total. He called to tell me, "they found you have a problem". I expected lung cancer, due to smoking and chemicals in the auto trade, but was told they found a "mass" on my left kidney. More testing. Meanwhile, I had some skin issues and was awaiting test results. Had appt's for both Docs the same day, and found out I had skin cancer, and less than an hour later, cancer on both kidneys. Left kidney cancer free now, as of Jan,2, 2015, and right kidney operation March 2, 2015, successful. Skin cancer is gone, for now, and a small hunk of my left ear.. After all the fuss about weight loss, I'm afraid to make sure they know I lost more weight last 2 months, down to just under 150. I'm small-boned, and 5" 8", and was always thin when young, 113 when I got married in 1961. Makes me wonder if I have more cancer that hasn't been found. I'll know pretty soon. JUNE 2015 As of the end of May, all my skin caner has been removed, including a hunk of my left ear. Reconstruction looks OK. My 2 major kidney cancer ops are healing well, all caner gone, 2 10 inch incisions ugly, a little swelling in my belly, all OK by end of the year. Weight down to 141-142, and now up, 144-145. A lot of muscle loss, due to physical limits all year, getting better. Heavy into racing season, the company race car has been really fast, I must be good. LOL. Didn't compete at the SCCA National Championship races in 2014 Was on the West coast way too much money to travel for the boss, and me too. Did the Championship this year at Daytona, the engine just not big enough, started 6th, and finished 6th. We run the lowest Production car class, "H" Production. Top speed in our class was 135MPH, our best 133.4MPH. Still can't believe our car went that fast. Looking for more in 2016. 2016 was a good racing season, the Midwest-Bayless car was competitive at every event. Sadly the one track we wanted the win, The SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Mid-Ohio was a real heart breaker. Earlier in the season at Mid-O we ran faster than ever before and at the runoffs we gained a bit more. Well, so did 6 other cars, whose "bits" were more than ours. Started 6, finished 7th.

Surprising news
Only got 4 hours sleep last night, so not on the top of my game. While watching NASCAR crashing out 12 or more cars with only a few laps to go, important message came from Christie, my daughter. I think I now understand I
Funny my middle name popped up. Odd that fire was involved in cause of death. I didn't die, but I tried, and did save a girl on fire from a fireworks sky rocket explosion. This was sorta spooky for me. The weird stuff you s

Back ground, the tow vehicle, which it and the trailer was painted Blue. Colors are Kawasaki Ninja Bike. Easy to see the car, day or night.
The funny nose is to keep the air from the front suspension, and to add downforce
The biggest change during the final rebuild, (routine every winter), was moving the roof back about 8 inches, to reduce the windshield angle. That caused the rear window angle to go flatter, dropping the roof air flow right
Summer, 1996. Sad photo for me. Car all dressed up, never raced it again. Was rebuilt during winter 1995/6 with several mods for better aerodynamics. On short tracks, aero starts being important over 60-70MPH, and we would
After 14 years in Road Racing with Doug Carmean, the last car with him was sold by Red Roof, and I got involved in asphalt oval track Racing. My first year, the car I took care of won Top Rookie of the Year, with Joyce Care

On the "False Grid" at Nelson Ledges. Probably 1978. Cars were lined up before the race, but not on track like the Indy 500. When the previous race is over, the cars drive out on the track for a parade lap or two, then get

Doug Carmean's Lotus Super 7 at a SCCA display at Northland Mall in Columbus. Never worked on a car before that was displayed in public, so this was a new experience. This is year 1 as Carmean's mechanic. Think 1971?
1980 June Sprints, Road America.
One of the bigger high points in my SCCA career as Doug Carmean's Crew Chief and race mechanic. FRONT ROW AT THE JUNE SPRINTS! Doug qualified 2nd and finished 2nd!
