Nan's Story

Nan's Story - I'm now at: the2hahns(at)aol(dot)com and After graduation from HPRHS, I spent the summer rehearsing and performing with a local group called "Actors, Inc.". The musical we did was "Carnival. Lots of fun! While in the midst of that summer, I auditioned for entrance to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC. THe Academy is the oldest acting, and accredited, school in the U.S. and is the equivalent of The Royal Academy, in London (across the "pond"). Amazingly, I was accepted! My Mom and I went into NY together and while I went in to audition, she waited in the little coffee shop next door. I was scared to death! But when they told me I was accepted and could pick up my contract at the front desk, I began to cry. And was still crying as I met her at the restaurant. She thought I'd been rejected, but was as thrilled as I about my acceptance! (As was Vanna Nigro - my friend and director in Actors.) My studies at the Academy were fantastic! I had both modern and Shakespearean acting, theatrical fencing, ballet, jazz, mime (as in Marcel Marceau), improv., and theatre history. After getting out of the Academy, I was hired as a member of a resident theatrical company in the Catskills, doing 10 musicals in 11 weeks. Don't know WHERE I got the energy (and wish I had bottled some of it!)! In the fall, I worked as a reservations teletypist for Trans World Airlines, plus taught fencing at a private health club. I also did some off Broadway reviews and several concerts in NYC. I married in late summer of 1966 and moved to upstate New York. We moved to South Carolina in 1971. Moved to PA in 1986. One son who just had his 34th birthday in July. Reconnected with Art Hahn after he saw my name in the alumni directory of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. We began exchanging Xmas cards and a letter or two a year. This was 1989. He divorced in 1993. I divorced and returned to SC in 1994. Art and I began a steady correspondence (he was very supportive, having gone thru a bad marriage too). Thru letters and phone calls (he was in Buffalo and our phone bills looke...Expand for more
d like the national debt!) we discovered we had an uncanny number of things in common. Tho' we hadn't seen each other in 30 years, we fell in love long-distance. He moved to South Carolina in Sept. of 1995. We married in May of 1997. Our 15th anniversay is approaching, and we are still newlyweds. He is my soulmate, and I couldn't be happier! Oh, by the way - I'm a retired professional singer now. Among other endeavors, I toured the upstate of SC, was soloist in the professional (paid) quartet at St. Matthews Lutheran Church 1974-1986, and performed as a soloist in various concerts for the Spoleto Arts Festival here, in Charleston, through 1986. I'm also a published poet. Today I'm retired from my position as an inside sales rep. for Wulbern-Koval Co. I spend my time with my husband who's partially retired and am working at following doctor's orders (have some health issues), and keeping up with friends and family thru e-mail, and facebook under Art-Nan + our married last name. Hope to hear from classmates via the latter! Here we are, 5 years later. My husband - a decorated Vietnam veteran - had a diagnosis of Type II diabetes and non small-cell lung cancer, thanks to the Agent Orange doused on Cu Chi, Vietnam. Fortunately he is in remission and has had several follow-up tests showing him to be clear of the cancer. So far, so good. My mobility continues to deteriorate and I'm on a walker full-time now. Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, along with spinal damage have taken their toll. I've decided I need a whole new body - Heidi Klum's would do just fine, thank you very much! (LOL) Pretty much a homebody now, but I do enjoy dining out from time to time. One Christmas, some years ago, my husband gave me a gift card to a favorite restaurant. That was such a hit that we now exchange restaurant gift cards for every holiday. Christmas is the biggest, with enough cards allowing us to dine out at various favorites every couple of weeks! Such fun eating out and not having to pay for it! And no clean up!! I guess this is about all for now. If it's in the cards, I'll see you in another 5 years!
