Arthur's Story

My current age is 63. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong. I don't know who might remember, but I quit school in Jauary of my senior year. It seems so stupid now but, hey, I was seventeen! Anyway, I joined the Navy and finished school through USAFI and received my diploma from Tech The Navy gave me a career when they sent me to Avionics (Aviation Electronics) School in Memphis. After "A" School, I was stationed in San Diego as staff in VP-31. I was still there when I was discharged in September 1966, just a couple days after my 21st birthday. My brother,Ed, had come to San Diego and we went back to Des Moines. Everyone we knew was gone or had moved on, except Les Johnson. He was my best buddy in high school. He was married to Jackie, a real sweet girl. In fact, I had gone with her sister Patsy when I was in the service and for a while afterward. So, anyway, Ed and I headed for Cedar Rapids because our parents and two sisters had moved while I was in the Navy. Ed and I stayed with Mom and Dad and got a job at Quaker Oats (BAD choice!). I only lased a couple weeks, but Ed stayed for over a month. In October, I landed a job at Northwestern Bell. You remember! When we had an excellent telephone system. Then in 1984, the Justice Department made a historical blunder and broke up the Bell System saying AT&T had a mo...Expand for more
nopoly. Well,I'm getting ahead of myself. By December, I had moved form my parents and a friend of mine at Bell knew three guys who had a house and were looking for a couple more to help share expenses. That lasted a couple months when we had an altercation with the other guys. Dave and I got our own apartment. In the meantime, after breaking up with Patsy, I met my future wife in Jauary 1967. Dave and I were out cruising one night when I spotted her. She and a friend were running an errand for her Dad. We followed them and ended up at a bowling alley on 1st Avenue. We started dating and were engaged about 3 months later. We were married August 19, 1967. Our first daughter was born on February 24, 1968. (Go ahead, count it out!) In 1970, I was promoted to Management and transferred to Des Moines as Computer Room Supervisor. We moved to Carlisle and had a house built. On October 21, 1975, our second daughter was born. I'd better speed this up! I was in Des Moines for 9 years and eventually promoted to Technical Supervisor in charge of the Servive Order System. Five people and a Team Supervisor spent 6 months in Samta Ana, CA training on the System and working with CDC as the System was being built. The last three months we brought our families out with us. I held this job until 1979 when I was transferred to the programming staff in Omaha. TO BE CONTINUED
