Ashley's Story

Life Graduated in December 2005 with my BS in Biochemistry (whoda thunk that!?), and went to work for a company in Austin that does pre-clinical trial tests on possible new drugs. As of August 18th, 2008, I became a Georgia Bulldog. I am currently attending UGA in Athens, GA for grduate school to attain my PhD in Molecular Genetics. Not bad for the girl that absolutely HATED Biology in high school, and most of college. School My memories of high school are hazy and vague. I changed a lot during those 4 years... from a shy, quiet little private school girl to a lot more open and.. ah.. more worldly.. 17 year old. If I had to do it all over again.. I would change things... though what, I'm not going to say because who knows who reads this thing (if anyone). All in all.. it's 4 years of my life that shaped who I am today. College So I took the 8 year track to get out of college. I started in Chemical Engineering because everyone told me I should. I was good at Chemistry and Calculus. Turns out, I wasn't all that great at either. Still good, but not good enough to let me enjoy ChemE. I was also a stupid 18 year old who thought "If ...Expand for more
Texas doesn't care if I go to class, why should I?" So, after failing my first semester, getting by on the skin of my teeth my second, I withdrew the next two. And then took a year off to work and see if college was really for me. Came to the conclusion that "Work sucks. I want to go back to school." Went back and did better, but still wasn't enjoying the classes. I decided to take some intro Bio courses just so I could have a basic Bio background, fully expecting to hate every second of them since I haven't enjoyed Biology in, well, ever. Surprisingly, I enjoyed Genetics. No, "enjoyed" is too mild a word. I loved it. I devoured it. I changed my major to Biochemistry based on one Genetics class, and never looked back. I graduated with my BS in Biochemistry in December 2005, and now I am working on my PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of Georgia. Workplace I work in a developmental biology lab at UGA. My work focuses on thymus development and organogenesis in mice. Specifically, I am involved in transcription factors that are involved in thymus development, as well as phenotypic analysis of other thymic gene mutants.
