Audie's Story

Life I have been married to Denis Silber for more than 40 years. We met as summer camp counselors in Wawona in Yosemite National Park and got married there four years later. We have two sons. Ben is married and he and his wife are both forensic psychologists in Arkansas. They have a one-year old son, and yes, I would LOVE to show you pictures. Our other son, Jason, is an orthotist/prosthetist and runs a clinic in Vacaville. His wife is a marriage & family therapist. Denis and I both retired from teaching elementary school full-time, but I substitute teach a lot and teach a high school home economics class. School My favorite memories of Sonora High are of the classes I took in the industrial ed. building -- girls' auto, drafting, and architecture -- and arts/crafts like ceramics, leathercrafts, and painting. I also loved the English classes I had from Mrs. Thule' and still use some of her strategies to teach literature to my students. And what about those exciting football games our sophomore year! Wasn't that the year our JV team was undefeated or almost? I have the drumbeat that got us down the parade route and into our half-time formations permanently etched in my mind. College I switched my college choice to Pacific Union College (a Seventh-day Adventist College in the foothills of the Napa Valley) late in the spring of our senior year. I spent my first year of college in a 6-girl room on the fourth floor of the freshman girls' dorm. Two of the girls were from Oakland, one from Chicago, one from the island of ...Expand for more
Palau, one from British Columbia, and me. It was a blast, and several of us old roommates still keep in touch with each other after all these years. Several years later I graduated with a double major in elementary education and social studies. I stayed an extra year to finish my Masters degree and get my state teaching credential. Workplace While Denis finished his Masters degree, I taught for two years near St. Helena, California. I had kindergarten in the morning and 7th-8th after lunch. (Yes, it was a stretch!) Then we moved to Cumberland, Maryland and team-taught a one-room school (grades 1-8) for four years. We returned to California (Eureka and Yuba City) so we could start our family and be close to aunts and uncles and grandmas and grandpas. Denis kept teaching while I became a stay-at-home mom. After home-schooling our boys through kindergarten and first grade, I started substitute teaching so I could have flexible hours. Eventually we moved to Lodi and I went back to work full-time. After several years teaching grades 4-6, I was asked to become a literacy coach for our public school district. I did that for two years but really missed having my own classroom. So when a third grade position opened up at our local church school several years ago, I switched gears and accepted the teaching position at Lodi Seventh-day Adventist Elementary. Now that I've retired from full-time elementary school teaching, I look forward to teaching high school Life Skills (Home Ec)! I have a great bunch of students!
