Aurora's Story

After I graduated from Gadsden in 1969 I decided to attend NMSU for the 1st summer session. I went back in the fall of 1969 but someone came into my life and changed all my plans. I met Bill Coon at church one Sunday morning in 1969 and after 2 months we started dating. He asked me to marry him, so in April, 1970 we were married. Bill was stationed at Fort Bliss and he got orders to go to Germany in June, 1970. Before he was shipped out to Germany we came to West Virginia so he could tell his family goodbye. We drove from San Miguel, New Mexico to Carolina, West Virginia in 3 days. When I got to Carolina I met my in-laws and the rest of Bill's family and friends. Bill was sent to Germany in June and I flew out in July. He was stationed in Bamberg, Germany and we lived off post. I would visit the small community we lived in and LOVED it there. Bill and I also got to travel to Austria while he was stationed in Germany and what an exciting time for me. After he was discharged from the military we came back to the states and lived in West Virginia for awhile but since Bill loved New Mexico so much we moved back. Bill was in the Army from May, 1968 until February, 1972. I can't believe we have been married for 42 years. Time for me has flown very quickly and I have had the opportunity to live in New Mexico, Missi...Expand for more
ouri and now in West Virginia. Bill is a minister so his calling has taken him to different areas of the country and I have really enjoyed living in the areas he has pastored. We were never able to have children of our own but have a court appointed ward and he has been with us since he was 5. Michael now is 32 and he has given us the best gift of all. He has a daughter named Sierrah Martienz, We call her Sarah and LOVE HER SO MUCH. Sarah is now 10 years old and in the fifth grade at Simpson Elementry School. We also have a grandson that is so full of energy but he's a sweet baby. Sammy as we call him was born in April of 2011. We have either one of them during the weekend, sometimes both of them and we love it. People ask me about my grandchildren and they always say my eyes light up when I speak about them. To us they are our every breath and heartbeat. They live about 45 minutes away. Since my father passed away I have not been back to New Mexico. My mother also died and was cremated and I was sent her ashes, so our plans are to return to New Mexico someday and take her ashes back. I never thought my life would turn out as it has. There are very few things I would change in my life but I have been very blessed to get to experience all I have and to see as much of the United States and the world as I have.
