Patricia's Story
Greetings to anyone reading this..............
This will be a very informal format, easy to read. I cannot believe that it's been 50 years since we left the "hallowed" halls of Mervo. I was at the dentist a few days ago and told him of the reunion. He's in his early 60's and asked me where I went to school, I told him and then I asked if he had seen the movie Hairspray, indeed he had, also the play. I told him John Waters wrote his story about Mervo and Buddy Dean after our school. That was US, weren't we great?
WORK HISTORY: My first job was at Spiegel Catalog (1962-1978). I was a hired as a credit clerk and left as a manager. All the store closed in 1978.
In 1979, I was hired as a secretary to the district manager of the local Acme stores. The company began closing all of the stores in 1982, alongwith our office. Do you notice a pattern here?
In 1982, I was hired by Angelo D'Anna to be a secretary for the personnel manager at the Holabird Ave. office.
It was a really great job, but in 1984, my mother passed away very suddenly and after the funeral, I decided to leave and take care of my children (12 and 5). It took them 4 months to find someone and they gave me quite a send off. They were really strict in their office, but as long as you did you job, everything was fine.
In 1986, I began to work part time for Budget Rent A Car in Towson. After a year, I was asked to work full time, which I did until 1993. It was a pretty stressful job. I kept all the records for the car and truck rental, besides, all the receipts for the towing company. The owner of all the companies is a personal friend of my husband and I, but I couldn't take the 50 hour work week. I walked out and never looked back.
I've always had allot of "spunk".
FAMILY: Married Don Miller in 1967, still together. Two sons, 41, 34 and stepson 53. Four granddaughters, 25, 15, 22 months and 4 months. Mr. "M" and I are both retired and it's allot of fun around this old house. If you believe that, I have a nice bridge to sell you.
INTEREST: Avid Gardener, helping homeless animals.
PETS: 1 German shepherd dog and...Expand for more
3 cats.
REGRETS: Believe it or not, I wish I would have tried harder in school. I'm allot smarter than I ever thought I was. And, Miss Bader, where ever you are, I apologize for being so rude and silly in your class. Yes, I can type and I can file. And my big accomplishment, besides having my sons, I taught myself how to use this new technology, THE COMPUTER !!!
UPDATE: I just rejoined Classmates for a few months. Now, the picture I posted is from our 50th reunion back in October, 2012. I am in the center of the picture, on the left is little Linda Fearson and Joanne Clarke is on the right.
NEW 2014 ---- I rejoined Classmates, thinking that I would be able enjoy my old friends and think about the past. But, that's not the way this has happened. I started feeling ill in December, 2013. I began having night sweats. Now, I went through menopause almost 20 years ago. I am telling you this at our age, IT'S NOT NORMAL. I made an appointment with my doctor that started bombarding me with all kinds of tests. FINALLY, I had a CT Scan that showed an abnormal growth in a LYMPM NODE. Very to sad to say, it was cancer. That scary word that we all hate to hear. I had cancer 7 years ago and thought that was that. Not entirely. That was breast cancer and this is small cell carcinoma. It's one of the deadliest forms of cancer and will spread if not killed off by chemotherapy. I've had four treatments, which is actually 12 visits. I have two more to go. I go every four weeks M, Tu. and Wed. for two hour sessions. After this is over, I have to have radiation treatments to be sure the area is clear of cancer.
In closing, it took a lot for me to tell my story, but I hope it helps somebody. Most of us are 70+, if you are having health problems that are completely out of the normal for you. GO SEE A DOCTOR. You may save your life. By the way, I had the lymph node removed, it was 3x6cm.
And last, and least, whoever remembered me as "awesome and romantic", it wasn't me. I was loud and boisterous.
And, I was engaged in the senior year. Never married him, just collected engagement rings :(
