Avelyn's Story

Congratulations to BLE #39, especially Nancy! So happy to see the baby who is home on Spring Break! (updated 03/10/2010) To: Lance Armsead Sorry, I saw that you had left an email for me, but I inadvertently deleted it. Awake at a ridiculous hour and watching my least favorite CSI. (updated 11/15/2009) Memorial Day. Today I am thinking of the brave who served our country and never made it back home and for their families. God bless and protect all our servicemen and women. (updated 05/25/2009) My thoughts and prayers to my dear friend Dana (Encinal c/o 1983) and her family. Dana's dad passed away on Tuesday in New Orleans. There was Katrina and now these trying economic times. A little breathing room would be great right about now. (updated 03/06/2009) Happy Mardi Gras, ya'll! I'm looking forward to my authentic king cake, courtesy of my Crescent City connection aka Helen. (updated 02/22/2009) ================================== Elementary (Petaluma, CA) Cookie cutter homes, learning how to ride a bike, a time when all the neighbors knew each other -- that was elementary life. Miwok wasn't completely built, so I went to La Tercera for kindergarten. It was my first time ever riding a school bus and horribly traumatic. Rhonda was my very bestfriend. Back then I never knew that our town was home to The World's Ugliest Dog Contest until I saw it on Animal Planet. Interests: ladybugs, flying kites, the ice-cream truck. Elementary (PHILIPPINES) It was massive culture shock when the Navy sent my dad overseas, and we moved back to the mother land. At St Cyr Academy it was my first and last time wearing a school uniform other than for P.E. class. My memory is probably way off, but it sure seemed like we walked at least a mile every day to the main road to catch a jeepney (no school buses) so we could be at school by 7:00 AM in time for the daily flag ceremony. To this day I recall how impressed I was that anyone within visual or audio range would stop in their tracks and stand at attention. This included regular people who happened to be passing by the school. I guess this display of patriotism and respect is why it kills me to be at a ballgame or other similar event where people talk during the national anthem or don't remove their hats or put their hands over their hearts. But I digress...A typical class had about 50 kids, and corporal punishment was alive and well. Boys took agriculture, meaning they worked on gardens outside, while girls took home ec and did embroidery indoors. That's just how it was. It's not PC to call it "third world" anymore, but I did have chickens for pets. We did NOT have a car, a telephone, continuously running water (it rotated), or air conditioning. The whole experience really gave me a deep appreciation for the things I am able to have now that I'm "stateside". Interests: Chinese jump rope, jacks, Voltes V (the best cartoon ever) Middle (Alameda, CA) I lived on Singleton Avenue by George P. Miller School. My Dad was transferred to New Orleans before I made it to Encinal. At Chipman, my friends included Rowena Medina, Lourdes Macale, Kelly Reyes, Vicki Bright, Ingrid Rider, Jocelyn Ramos, Alexis Roth, Susan Ho, the twins Edith & Eleanor, Shirley Robertson, Lisa-Lori-Stephanie, and Deanna Lara. Alameda was one of my favorite bases, but I haven't been back since the late 70's. Rowena and I could hang out all day, and with just one dollar we could buy a soda and an ice-cream cone and still have money left over. I took art with Mr. Dog Skins (Dawkins), and I think his wife was the English teacher who had us analyze the lyrics to "Stairway to Heaven". In Mr. Preminger's class I was captain of Avelyn's Aardvarks team when he did the jeopardy-sty...Expand for more
le reviews before a test. Mrs Hamilton did the splits (I've never been able to do them). And Lord only knows why, but I remember Mr. Yamasaki telling our class, "Sex is fun." Let's move on. Interests: wall ball (like racquetball but with a dodgeball), going to the drive-in in my pjs, the piano playing chicken at the state fair. High School (New Orleans, LA) - Part I Edna Karr had such a great fight song. It must have been winter time when we moved here because no one knew I had long hair. I kept my big winter coat on all the time. Again, no school buses but at least they gave us bus passes. Debbie Ramirez, Debbie Bell, and Helen were the first people I met. In P.E. all the girls had a workout routine that we did to Olivia Newton-John's "Physical". It was a rare chance to be the seniors of the school even though we were 9th graders, so I stayed instead of transferring to Walker. Helen was pretty mad at me for that. High School (New Orleans, LA) - Part II O Perry Walker was within walking distance to my house in Algiers. My little brother Brian got to play an orphan in the high school's production of "Oliver". Helen had managed to talk me into trying out for the flag team, so we became Walkerettes. If I thought it was fun watching the Mardi Gras parades on the West Bank, it was even more fun to be marching in them. Some of my best memories were of Helen and me just hanging out at her house down by the levee. I did come back for the 20th reunion and had a blast. Cristeta came to visit me in KW, and I was so happy to see her. I've been staying in touch with Robert and Cliff, though I haven't exactly been doing a great job at it. I'd love to hear from Tory in Seattle. Interests: Mardi Gras, boardwalk at Lake Pontchartrain High School (Key West, FL) After New Orleans, my family moved to FL where I started as a junior at KWHS. It was a tough move because I left a lot of friends in New Orleans who are very dear to me. Thank God for Rina who really saved me. Poor Rina had it much worse because she moved to KW her senior year. We both became chicken slingers at KFC when it was still ground level. It must've been in the D Wing hall at KWHS when I ran into a fellow Chipman alumni, Julie Smith. Turns out, I ended up working for the same real estate company (different offices) where her mom worked and didn't realize our connection until I saw Julie's picture on her desk. Talk about a small world! I'm a Mrs (Key West, FL) I met and married a fellow Navy brat. We have two sons, 21 and 19. ================================== What I liked best about the places I've visited/lived: 1-Petaluma & Alameda, CA - so much to do! 2-PHILIPPINES - finally got to meet my relatives, learned another language 3-New Orleans, LA - meeting Helen, cafe au lait & beignets, Miss Rita's gumbo (It is THE BEST ya'll), big city life 4-Key West, FL - meeting my husband, small town life, cafe con leche, people watching during Fantasy Fest 5-ARIZONA - Grand Canyon 6-Las Vegas, NV - giant donuts (I was only a kid!) 7-CONNECTICUT - our friends John & Raffy, the incredible fall season 8-Dyersville, IA - hubby's grandparents' home; played ball at THE Field of Dreams...but we did not see dead people 9-Savannah, GA - seeing my family, historic squares 10-Normandy, FRANCE - The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial (seen in the movie 'Saving Private Ryan') 11-Arlington, VA - Arlington National Cemetery where hubby's dad was laid to rest 12-Washington, DC - Vietnam Veterans Memorial 13-Koln, GERMANY - the warmth of the people we met, the outstanding food, the history, seeing the Pope 14-Daytona Bch, FL - watching a sea turtle lay its eggs then return to the ocean, Pepsi 400, walking along the beach, the boardwalk
