Axel's Story
My East Germany escape to America!
My father was in the German army and a prisoner of war, held captive by the US Army. After the war he returned home to his home city, which was now in the Russian zone, or also known as East Germany. A few years later I was born and my father knew that the future was no longer in East Germany. One day he and my mother escape viy what was called the green border, for you see at this time the wall was not yet built, but Russian snipers were placed to stop anyone leaving the Russian zone. Both made to western Germany, but I was left behind, because I was only 6 months old at the time and the risk would have been to big for three persons to escape at one time. My fathers goal now was to get his son over to the free world. He noticed that a old man lived in East Germany, but had a garden across a small creek, that was the border between the two zones. Each day the man crossed the creek into western Germany and returned home that evening. The Russian border control, knew this, but let the old man pass each day, knowing he would return in the evening. My father met ...Expand for more
the old man and told him about his son and ask if he could help. The the following day, my grandmather, who still resided in Eastern Germany and took care of me, gave me drugs so I would remain quite and the old man came to pick me up. At the time I was only 6 months old. The old man put me into a burlap bag and began his daily tour to Western Germany across the small creek. But the Russians noticed that there was smething the bag and demanded that the old stop. But he knew that if he would stop, then he and myself would die. He kept walking and the Russians began to shoot. I'm not sure how many times the old man was hit, but for some power, he kept on walking until he had reached the banks of Western Germany. With his last strength he threw the bag over to my father who was waiting and died. My father took me and we never saw the old man again. Never had a chance to say thank-you.
That is how I got from East Germany to West Germany.
If anyone is further interested, I can continue the story on how we got from Germany to Chicago with only a few dollars in our pocket.
