JOANN (BENDER)'s Story
In our senior year at SCH one of the recruiters that came to the school was from NASA, Moffett Field in Mt. View. I just thought it would be good practice to take the test to get used to taking these tests, so I did. Voila! I got a job offer from them. Since I had started school when I was 4, I was only 16 when I graduated from high school, so they told me I had to wait until I was 17 (in November) to start work. d in wild edible plants—after all--who wants the burden of a 40 lb. pack when you can have a 12 lb. backpack!! I went to extremes to make it as light as possible—half of comb, short handle on toothbrush, etc. ☺ When you don’t have to carry food, hiking can truly be a delight! You just walk along picking things, and when lunch/dinner times come along, you stop and cook your meal! By that time, I had two children, ages 5 and 7, and we hiked the Pacific Coast trail, through Oregon and Washington for the summer. When we returned, I got a job at a hospital in LV for several years, and then entered the technology field with a company called ViaWest, which is now—by way of a few acquisitions, now called Flexential although I retired a few years ago, before all the name changes. I have been living in Henderson, NV for the past 20 years—currently with my sweet little dog named Terri!
