C Michael's Story
I was born in the mid-1950's in southern Mississippi. As a child I lived mostly with my Grandparents in Mississippi but later I began traveling with my parents. My Dad worked for RCA, the Navy and for NASA so we traveled quite a bit. I often tell people that I have lived places that aren't even on a map - I remember living in a place in the Appalachian mountains that is still not on Google Earth to this day. I have lived in Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Ontario, Canada. I have visited every state in the continental United States and Hawaii at least once, I have traveled extensively in Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean and I have visited South America, Europe and the United Kingdom. My wife is a first generation American and most of her family still lives in Ireland, England and Malta so we try to visit the UK as often as possible. During high school I was fortunate to live in three very unique places. The first was Lexington Park, MD when my Dad worked at Pautuxent Naval Air Station. I attended Great Mills High School and was in the marching band. I was also a member of St. Adelaides Drum & Bugle Corp. Next I lived in Middleburg, Virginia - the heart of horse country - where I worked part-time on a horse farm and attended high school at Loudoun Valley High. And finally I finished high school in Jefferson County WV. Jefferson High School wa...Expand for more
s in it's first year, having consolidated 3 smaller schools. Not being from any of those 3 schools was great for me since I didn't need to belong to any specific group. In my late youth (the college years) I spent at least part of several summers in Mexico and Nicaragua sampling local color and getting somewhat of a "non-traditional education." On the topic of education I have attended Colleges and Universities in four states and the District of Columbia and much to my dismay I still do not have a Ph.D.
I have had jobs ranging from salesman to scientist, including pumping gas into airplane wings, working as an electronics salesman, as a communications specialist and then later as a criminal intelligence specialist for a government organization, as a part-time DJ during the heyday of Disco, as a road manager for a rock band, as a fashion photographer, as a talent scout for a major magazine, as an assistant to a scientist studying in Central America, as a clinical psychologist intern in a federal alcohol and drug abuse detox program, as an assistant curator at a then major but now defunct marine park, as a general curator at a public aquarium, as a federal fisheries biologist/manager, a recreational fisheries coordinator, as an artificial reef program coordinator, and as an Education & Outreach Coordinator for a federal scientific agency.
These days I live in southwest Florida with my wife Pat and my two teenaged daughters Colleen & Collette.
