Curt's Story

Curt Baker is Superintendent of the Moon Area School District ("MASD"), a 3,700 student, high-performing school system in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Upon his arrival in November 2013, the School Board extended a significant challenge to Curt - and by transference, to every Moon Area School District employee: "œAssure that every child achieves his or her full potential, and, in the process, move the School District from among the top 10% in Pennsylvania to among the top 1%. Then stay there." Accordingly, Mr. Baker has committed his Superintendency to transforming MASD from "œexcellent" to "œtruly extraordinary." Before his Moon landing, Curt was Deputy Superintendent for Roanoke City Public Schools ("RCPS"), a primarily urban school district located at the southern end of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. RCPS provides instruction for approximately 13,000 students, Pre-K through Grade 12. During his nearly seven years in Virginia, Curt's scope of responsibility included finance, facilities, technology, transportation, food services, athletics/student life, payroll, purchasing, warehouse, human resources, and student services. The hallmark of Curt's work in Roanoke was the effective stewardship of public resources. By staying true to the philosophy that financial decision making should be guided by the concept of: "œstudents first, employees next, and everything else a distant third," RCPS successfully improved its graduation rate by more than 20 percentage points while at the same time increasing its fund balance by $29 million. Prior to joining RCPS, Curt was the Chief Financial Officer for the School District of Lancaster ("œSDoL"), the second oldest school system in Pennsylvania. When Curt joined the District, SDoL had a negative fund balance and had operated in the red for five of the previo...Expand for more
us six years. Under Curt'™s leadership, SDoL posted an operating surplus every year and finished the 2006-07 fiscal year with a positive fund balance. During this time, funds available for class size reduction, instructional materials, new instructional programs, and teacher support increased by more than $10 million. Curt received his Master'™s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and first in his class. As part of his undergraduate program, Curt also studied in England at the London School of Economics. Curt has taught in Widener University's Department of Economics, the University of Houston's Graduate School of Business Administration, and Hampton University'™s Leadership Academy for educators. Curt served his community as an elected School Director for the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District from 2003 to 2010. He served as Board President in 2006 and 2007. As one of his first acts as MASD Superintendent, Curt founded Moon Area Tigers Rugby, a varsity club program at Moon Area High School. Curt proudly serves as the program's Head Coach, which boasts both boys and girls teams. This follows a long stint as Head Coach of Unionville Rugby, a varsity club sport at Unionville High School which Curt founded in 2003 and grew into one of the largest youth rugby programs in the nation. Curt'™s Unionville High School boys varsity team won the Pennsylvania State Championship in 2013. Curt and his wife, Debbie (also a 1977 graduate of Hoover High), have been married for nearly 30 years. They have 2 boys: Joe, a graduate of Penn State'™s Smeal College of Business who now works for PulseCX (a marketing strategy firm), and Chris, who is a sophomore at Penn State.
