Christina's Story
Most will remember me as a very shy, quiet person.
I was married and had a baby at the end of our senior year - followed by two more kids. When the kids were 3, 7 and 9, their father and I were divorced. It was a very difficult time for me. But rather than go on welfare or depend upon others for help, I got a job working full-time at Paccar Parts as a file clerk! and part-tme at Penny's in Southcenter. I went back to school. For the next 5.25 years, I worked, took care of my kids, and went to school. I graduated with a degree in Business, earning a 3.95 GPA.
It was hard work, but I did it all on my own. Thankfully, my kids were super great during this period. When I fianlly graduated, their only comment was that they never wanted to eat another hotdog as long as they lived!!
I said that I did it all on my own, but that's not quite correct. Paccar paid for my schooling. All I paid for was parking and books. I'm forever grateful to Paccar; I wouldn't have been able to pay for school on my own. I also have my supervisor at Paccar to t...Expand for more
hank. About half way through, I came home one evening after classes and found that my babysitter had her boyfriend over (and they were drinking beer)! I fired her. I no longer had a sitter for the kids during evenings. I was getting tired by then anyway, so this was the last thing I needed. I went to work the next morning feeling defeated and ready to quit school. But my supervisor, Gayle, a single working Mom herself, would not hear of it. For the rest of that quarter, she babysat my kids while I was in school - free of charge. Without her, I don't know if I would have continued...
Eventually, I took a job at Boeing in the Procurement Dept, contracting with suppliers for aircraft interior parts. I traveled fairly often, mostly to Europe and Japan.
I am now happily married to a crazy Dutchman! My kids are happy, responsible and wonderful adults. And I have four beautiful grandkids: a 7 yr old granddaughter, a 5 1/2 yr old grandson, a 3 1/2 yr old granddaughter and a 6 month old grandson!
Life is good.
