Frances's Story

Life Hi! I can't believe it's been 50 years since we graduated! My late husband Don and I have 14 grandkids and 6 kids between us. I live in Hemet with a dog and a cat in the home built with lots of help from friends and family over 40 years ago. It's only two houses down from the house we lived in when I was six months old, so I've come a long way in life! :-) I retired back in 1997, but Didnt like it, so I went back to work for a municipal utility, after working in a travel agency, a law office, a jewelry store, and my son's shower enclosure business on a consultant basis. The company from which I retired was Ballard Gas Service, Inc., a propane company. I was active in the Western Propane Gas Association, three Chambers of Commerce, and Girl and Boy Scouts. I have also been active in Soroptimists for 42 years, serving as club President, region Governor, federation Board Member and International Consultant, then getting to vote (with 2 other people from our federation and 3 each from the other 3 federations) at the international level. I sure never thought I'd be sitting in on a meeting of ECOSOC at the UN with a microphone in front of me, but it was definitely a high point. I got to do a lot of travelling to international board meetings, and met many interesting Soroptimists along the way. All this because I was familiar with Oxford English and parliamentary procedure. Sometimes it pays to be a nerd! I love to read, play board games (computer games when there isn't a willing person a...Expand for more
round to play with) and travel. The islands of Hawaii are my favorite place to rest and relax. When I was younger, traveling across the country in a motorhome was my favorite thing to do with the family. Now it's playing with my granddaughter and great granddaughter. God bless! Fran School My favorite teacher of all time was Phil Simon (Civics). He had a way of making you think, and opened whole new areas of interest for me. I said that when interviewed for the local paper, and he came by my office to visit. I'm so glad that happened before he passed away. There is no way I'd go back to high school -- that experience is not for sissies! Especially going to 3 different high schools, none of which had the same curricula. However, I think my favorite experiences were in Selah, Washington with homecoming, dances and basketball games. The Senior Trip to Disneyland with Hemet High was pretty great, too -- mainly just having sleepy conversations in the bus on the way home. I also remember David Whitby with fondness for great conversations and for explaining geometry to me. It's not his fault that I needed help again when I took it in college 30 some years later, just a product of never having used it in the interim. It's not high school, but Selah Junior High was great fun. I remember being taught algebra by the Superintendent, playing a wise man (with bumps) in a play, reading almost everything but the science fiction section in the library, and just caring and involved teachers and great people.
