Barbara's Story
Life
After graduation, I attended UTA for 3 years, and UT Austin for 1 year, graduating in 1971 with a BA in math. Right after graduation, I accepted a job at the Veterans Administration Data Processing Center, where I was trained as a computer programmer. I continued to work in Information Technology for the next 29 years. I was married briefly to another programmer while working at the VADPC.
In 1976 I moved to Dallas to work at Blue Cross, but ended up getting 'taken over' by EDS in 1979. After 6 months as an EDS employee, I accepted a job at Mobil Oil, where I worked as a sys...Expand for more
tems analyst/project leader for the next 20 years. Mobil was a great company to work for.
I remarried in 1984. My husband, Peter, is the contrabassoonist in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. We have no kids. We live in an older neighborhood in Dallas.
In December 1999, Exxon 'merged' with Mobil. It was clear that Exxon intended to move Mobil's Dallas IT department to Houston, and I really didn't want to move to Houston since Peter couldn't move with me. I decided to go ahead and retire at age 50 (which Mobil allowed but Exxon didn't). I thoroughly enjoy being retired.
