Barbara's Story

I left Osseo HS in the fall of 1967 while a junior, because my family moved to Michigan. It was a heart renching move that took many years for me to adjust to. While I did graduate from HS and college in Mich I still think of my years at Osseo with great fondness, and miss the many people I knew. I have not heard from one of my best friends Sherry Smith in several years, and look for her bio every now and then. Anyone know her whereabouts or email address I would love to contact her. Because I left Osseo under protest I think my memories of HS there were very positive. I remember going to many football games..remember the great game where the barn burned down during a game! eating pizza at the local pizza place we walked to after any of the sports games we all went to. That was something my friends and I were really into..going to sports events. The dances where you prayed someone would ask you to dance. My first homecoming dance was at Osseo. I remember walking to the local park and elementary schools to go ice skating, and warming up in the warming sheds. Do they still do that? Oh and the roller skating bus.aka: the make-out bus. Observed lots of action on that bus! I remember the pep ralleys, the way it seemed everyone had school spirit and we wore sayings like..trample tech. etc. Our horror at some of the football team being caught with alcohol and being suspended before an important game. Drugs ...Expand for more
were relatively new and I was not introduced to them until I got to Mich. Much rougher HS here despite being 30 some miles north of Detroit. And no I didn't really get into drugs, saw too much damage to poeple I knew and it scared me frankly. For me Osseo HS seemd like the best of times. Mn seemd so much more innocent, and fun than Mich....but that may have been me rather than the state! Ok fast forward to today...Currently I am 'retired' from the state of Mich where I worked for 20 years in the welfare division both as a payments worker and supervisor. Both of my parents are deceased, and my mother is buried in Northfield Mn as per her request so I do visit occassionally. My husband and I own and operate a small retail meat market in Shelby Twp Mi and up until this past year were doing well. Mich economic issues have taken a toll but we are holding on at this time. I now am on the local township downtown development board ( an appointed position)and enjoying being a part of the development in our area as well as the social ( yes even the political) aspect of it. I continue to live in Mich with my husband of 35 years and have two grown( a son and daughter) children who are also married. Plus I am the grandparent to 4 yr old and 1 1/2 yr old little girls. Cannot believe I am old enough to be a grandparent...still shocks me to admit it! I still consider MN home despite living in Mich for over 40 years now.
