Barbara's Story

After high school, I went to USF (Tampa campus). I graduated in 1977 with a BA in Fine Arts/Theater/ Costume design. I did costumes for a couple of movies that were filmed in the Tampa Bay area, lots of dinner theater and community theater, and various other design and sewing ventures. It was fun, but I got tired of the hand-to-mouth existance. So I started working in factories. That was during the late 70's and the early 80's when we experienced an economic recession. I got laid-off alot. Finally, I applied for a job with the Postal Service. I took the test and 3 years later I got hired. That was 23 years ago. I'm st...Expand for more
ill there. I spent 14 of those years as the Local union president. After 14 years of everybody's mistakes becoming my problem, I got pretty burned out. The local voted to merge with another local, and I passed the torch to them. Meanwhile, from the 1980's to the year 2000, I've been married 3 times and divorced twice. We have a house here in St. Pete. My husband has done alot of work on the house and has made it very comfortable and suited for our taste and lifestyle. I have a stepson, Jimmy. He's 22. He's a great kid. What a joy it has been having him in my life. My hobbies still include sewing, and I love to cook.

The camp fire was fun. It was cold. Of course, anything below 70 degrees is cold to me!

Today is my mom's 96th birthday! She's looking good!
Clyde Butcher at the James Museum May 5th. He was signing books, etc. His lecture was fascinating. It gave me a new way to think about lighting. And he was happy to have his picture taken!
A picture of me taken in 1979. I friend who was a photographer took this picture to use for the cover of an economics textbook. I think his name was Richard Schenke. That was 5 years before I actually became a union member.
