Barbara's Story

Life I have lived in Wells since graduation and now work as an Educational Tech at the High School. Talk about deja vu, when I started in 1999, there were 11 teachers still working that we had in high school!! Bruce Coburn just retired last spring and now he's back as a long term sub until they can replace a science teacher who resigned. The hardest thing was learning to call them by their first names! In our day we had respect for our teachers, unfortunately that's not the case with a lot of students now. In the spring, summer, and fall, I also manage an inn here in Wells. I have only been out of New England twice in my life, once to chaperone a band trip my children went on , and once to assist a student to attend a journalism conference. The band went to Hershey PA. but it was right after I found out I had diabetes so I couldn't enjoy the chocolate. The conference was in Kansas City Mo, and on the way to the airport I realized that not only did I have 24 hr. responsibilty for a severely handicapped child, but I had never flown before and wh...Expand for more
at if I freaked out!!! Everything went fine and we had a blast. I have done many things since high school. I didn't have money to go to college right away, and then I made the mistake of getting married. I had two wonderful children but a not so wonderful husband, and ended up raising my kids alone from the time they were 4 and 3. Rob is 29 and lives in Wells, Kim is 27 and lives in Sanford. She is married with a daughter who is 10 and a son who is 7. I worked at Converse, then went to the IGA in Wells after Rob was born. I was the Office Mgr/Bookkeeper for 7 years and then entered the Apprenticeship Program at the Navy Yard where I studied Machining. In 1991, I got riffed, but got one year of free tutition so I went to college and got an associates degree in accounting at night while working during the day. Unfortunately, I couldn't complete my bachelors degree for financial reasons, and worked in various jobs until starting at the High School in 1999. I promised my kids I would not work at the school until they were done, and here I am!
