Barbara's Story
Short version)Travel and language have been an important part of my life along with my family. (Long version)I spent the summer after graduating from Neshaminy HS in Spain and Germany, then attended the Univ. of Delaware for BA and MA in Spanish, minor German. Of that time, I spent almost two years studying in Europe.
Because I didn't have an "education" degree, but rather one in literature and language, I taught at private catholic schools in northern Delaware until I met my husband and moved to Texas in 1980. I spent the summer of '80 cramming to pass the Delaware Teacher certification hoping I could just transfer it to Texas. Ha!
I had to take a bunch of silly "Texas demanded" courses and so eventually after learning about the teaching environment in Texas I got out of teaching. My husband, a chemical engineer, was working on a plant start up, and I was bouncing around the house, so I decided to go back to school to reeducate myself. I picked computer science since that seemed to be a pretty up and coming topic at the time, especially since we lived very close to the Johnson Space Center and Mission control. While studying computers at the Univ of Houston-Clear Lake, I began to work there and eventually managed the academic computers there and set up their first network in 1985 using MS beta software. We did a lot of beta testing for networks. The World Wide ...Expand for more
Web didn't exist then, but there was ARPANET and we had fun with something called "phone" which was the precursor of "IMing" or "chat". During that time my husband and I traveled to Europe and South America.
When we were blessed with our first child, I decided to "retire" for awhile and enjoy motherhood. When kids were 3 and 5 I tried to go back to work and spent 1 1/2 years with the NASA contractor, Lockheed. That environment was too difficult to juggle with my idea of motherhood so I retired again.
When the girls were in school, I did a lot of volunteering at their elementary school.
In 1997, I got back into teaching, but privately. Now I work with families of foreign transferees who come to Houston on their career climb. I teach them English, and help their kids with schoolwork and help them adjust to the American culture. It's a part time job and lots of fun.
I love to travel to see my "old" students when they return home, where ever in the world that may be.
I used to visit the Philadelphia area frequently to visit my parents, but now they're both gone, so I will need other reasons to return.
Retirement began in 2018 and my husband and I continue to enjoy travel. Now we have more time and are blessed to be able to expand our view of the world by visiting even more places and having more adventures.
Would love to hear from some of my "old" classmates.
