Barbara's Story
Life
After High School I attended N. Seattle Community College, taking Psychology, Arts, and Early Childhood Education. That was interesting, but not enough to want kids of my own yet! I tried my hand at a variety of jobs: sold Cookware and cutlery, Avon, cut out wetsuits, etc., then joined the Air Force in 1974. I was in Food Service Preparation, stationed in Udorn, Thailand at the end of the Vietnam War. Then I had surgery on my knee, returned to Kingsley Field AFB, Ore., got married, had a son, got divorced, and returned to Seattle. I rounded out my education with an AAS from Edmonds Community College and a 2-yr Accounting Certificate from Renton Technical College.
I raised Brian with the help of my family and a "Big Brother" named David, who has become a lifelong friend. When Brian was ten I found my life partner, Richard. We've been married 27 years. His three daughters were teenagers, are now married, and we have six grand-children. They live in ID, WI, and SC, and we enjoy visiting them. Brian is a software engineer, married, and currently living in Seattle.
I am retired as Bookkeeper/Accountant for the VFW Dept. of Washington, State Hdq., and would enjoy scrapbooking if I had any time and could keep all my projects under control. ...Expand for more
I have two box turtles, for which Richard built a lavish house.
We are active in the Masonic community: I was Worthy Advisor of Ark Assembly #23, Order of Rainbow for Girls, in 1971; Worthy Matron of Ark Chapter #86, Order of Eastern Star, in 1996-97, and Worthy Matron of Nesika Chapter #54 OES three times. Richard has been Worshipful Master of Ark Lodge #126, F&AM, twice, and was Worthy Patron with me when I was Worthy Matron.
We are active members of Rainier VFW Post & Auxiliary #2289: I have been President of the Auxiliary five times, and District President four years. Richard was District Commander once, and is Quartermaster of our Post. I am in the line to become the State President of the VFW Auxiliary in 2021. We now accept male family members of combat veterans; ask me how to join!
We are also highly involved at Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church, where I was baptised, attended church school, and was the nursery attendant for 12 years. If you're still in the area, I invite you to join us in worship and fellowship on Sunday at 10:00 AM.
They say if you want something done, give it to a busy woman. (But not me; I'm exhausted!) Well, I'm sure my story is not over...God isn't finished with me yet. More later. Barbara Heston-Moore
