Barbara's Story

In 1964, at the age of 19, I married Ehssan Nayebi who worked with me teaching english at the Iran-America Society in Tehran. He had earned a medical degree in San Francisco, was 29 and totally swept me off my feet. I was 21 when my first son was born. My parents were working in Iran in 1964 so we had a great opportunity to get to know his family and had a big, loud wedding at my parents' house. I got to be the romantic princess! Tehran in the 60's was very exciting and cosmopolitan. I learned to speak farsi fluently, wore mini-skirts, danced my feet off in fancy discos and had great jobs. From 1968 to 1969, we lived in Madrid, Spain. My ex-husband was studying medicine at the University of Madrid and I studied spanish literature. Bob, our oldest, spoke spanish as his first language and I also still speak it fluently. Johnny, our youngest, was born in 1969 and we returned to Iran by car driving through Europe, Turkey and down into Iran. It was the trip of a lifetime and I am so glad I had that opportunity. Bob, 44, and Johnny, 41, were born in the U.S. but spent most of their early childhood in Tehran and have warm memories of our life there. We had it very good! I was able to travel all over the country and even spent time with friends in Afghanistan in 1975. I am still close with Bob and Johnny's Iranian aunt and cousins. In 1973, my ex-husband had a sense that a revolution was brewing in Iran. We came back to the States in Fall of '73 and settled in a small town near Pomona, CA. He set up a medical practice and I returned to Cal Poly, Pomona to finish my college degree. Unfortunately, the marriage didn't survive the move and by 1975, we were divorced and sharing custody of two little boys. I met John in 1977 -- he was my professor at Cal Poly and I asked him out! (I had gotten over being shy.) We have been married since 1978. He had travelled all over the US as well as Europe, had lots of adventures and had never been married. John and I stayed in the organizational development field all these years hoping to make a difference in the way people are treated in large corporations. Ahhhh -- the illusions of youth. Our boys have also travelled all over the world. At one point, Johnny, the youngest wasn't sure if he was American, Iranian or Italian (...Expand for more
we spent a lot of time in Italy when he was little)! Johnny is a news editor now working on "Attack of the Show, on the cable channel G4, but has been a surfer, poet, painter, clothing designer and taco cook (there may be more I don't know about). Bob, our oldest, we call "Hollywood" Bob. One reason is that he actually lives in Hollywood the city. The other is that he has collected a large group of ex-girlfriends that are now good friends with him; and he is still single. He is a motion graphic designer with AOL Studio. Johnny married Albena Theofilova, a very interesting woman from Sophia, Bulgara. Bob is now wiith a special woman -- we have no grand children! But one wacky English Springer Spaniel keeps us moving! Thirty years in Southern California (L.A. and Laguna Beach) came to a close in 2003 and we moved to the Monterey Bay Area looking to make a big change. After living in the Santa Cruz Mountains for three years, we moved to Ashland, Oregon in May, 2006 and became semi retired. Actually we are busier than ever. John serves on several nonprofit boards and occasionally works with corporate clients on organizational development projects. I am on the board of Friends of the Animal Shelter and a passionate artist. At the moment I am doing digital printmaking and combining my photographs with etchings and other prints that I pull on my own small press. I do miss living in the Monterey Bay area and in the Santa Cruz Mountains particularly. It was a great place to be while trying to figure out the rest of our lives. However, Oregon is a wonderful state and we are exploring more of it. June, 2012, Sadly John and I won't be spending the rest of our lives together. We filed for divorce in January and I recently moved to Los Angeles to be near my sons and look for work. I will see some of you at the MUHS Class of '62 reunion in November! August, 2013 -- Love living in L.A.! Have a great job at a private school, lots of friends and see my sons frequently. I am very happily single and enjoying an active life. August, 2016 -- I've been living in Santa Cruz, CA area for 2.5 years and have a great job that keeps me very busy. My two sons and daughter-in-law are living in Los Angeles and come north quite a bit. It's great to be living on Monterey Bay again.
