Barbara's Story

Life My life was that of a Navy Dependant who lived in Gitmo twice, first in 1965 to 1966 we lived in Nob Hill, the housing area closest to the dump and The NorthEast Gate, then from 1969 to 1971. We lived in Center Bargo the second time. My father retired in Pensacola Fla. Even though my dad retired, I didn't, I am still on the road. I've written a book about my life, it is a "print on demand "so it has to be ordered. Its called "Still On The Road" by Barbara ONeill it is available throught amazon.com. A big part of it is about Gitmo living, and it is full of photos. I hope you will check it out. School Willian T Sampson was a tight knit school, all the kids went to the one school and everybody knew everybody we were all family. The best times to me were the Flag Football Games! and the Pool Parties, the sockhops at the Teen Club and the Moonlight Rides on horseback to Hidden Beach. We were lucky kids to experience the kind of life the base had to offer. Gitmo was mine and my familys happiest time in our lives. If I could I would stay in that Dream. Even 40 years later I still dream of going back. Workplace The place I work now has some pretty nice co-workers who I consider friends, after all we have worked together for 11 years now. I started out in the Electrical Trade working Paper Mills and Chemical Plants, I considered myself as a"Self Contractor" And worked for some pretty big Companys. I fell into the Nuclear Construction World 11 years ago. Now I can use the" plant" bathrooms instead of a" portajon" and eat in the" plant" lunchroom and even drink out of the" plant" water-fountain. For 18 years I was considered "Construction Tr...Expand for more
ash" I like to think of myself as "Graduated" from the papermill world. But in this business you Never say Never. It is 2007 now and my career is changing direction. I don't work for Westinghouse any more, I work for The Shaw Group based out of Houston and Baton Rouge, they are climbing up the step ladder in the construction world and 5 of us are starting the "Orbital Welding "Dept for them. I am now a Salaried Employee and have all the benifits to go with it. And I am Still ON the Road. update 9-18-07 I am home now taking some time off, probably the rest of the year, then I will start to look again. Shaw didn't work out. I hope to go back to GE Nuclear Energy, their shop is in San Jose CA and I Love CA!! I have seen Karen Prejean and talked to Diane Wallace and been in contact with Debbie Good,Mike Zebell, Lori Billingsley, Carol Beuscher and Pat Duffus what a great site this Classmates.com is!! I'm still looking for George Carroll. Found George. He fine and doing well. As per his brother Mike. UPDATE 3-6-2011. Well I am back with PCI/Westinghouse and just getting home from an outage out in San Clemente Ca at a Plant called SONGS San Onofre Nuclear Generating Satation, we replaced 2, 430 ton steam generators. My mother Carol passed in April 8,2010, she was miss-diagnosed and ended up passing over her body being poisened by Septic Shockl. I can't find a lawyer who wants to take the case.( Small town) they say there are too many people involved. I am home in KY taking a few months off before I go back to work in June. I am making the 2011 GTMO-Reunion out of Tampa for the 4 day cruise to Cozumel. I hope to see old friends there.
