Barbara's Story
Life
Married -5/18/96 mother of two boys: Spencer Alan (DOB:2/12/98) Mason Christopher (DOB:4/5/00) Graduated from BSC with Asc. of Science degree & Medical Laboratory Technician Board certified-1992. Worked at Medcenter One Health Systems, Bismarck for three years. And then with Dakota Heartland Health Systems, Fargo until Dec. 1998. Purchased first home in January 1999. Enjoy redecorating and landscaping it!! Husband is a graduate of BSC & NDSU.(Computer-Electrical engineer)Works for Microsoft & plays softball for them.
Both our children have a medical condition call Pervasive Developmental Disorder - (PDD) A mild form of Autism, and Sensory Dysfunction Issues. Our eyes have been opened up widely to the world of special needs children.
We found out their condition was caused by the Thimerasol Preservative in some of their childhood vaccinations. Our eldest was diagnosed with MMR induced colitis in Nov. 2002.
We are hoping that they will find a cure. It is because of them I have become an advocate for autism research and awareness.
School
I miss the simplier times of high school - ah.... Sigh.
College
I'd love to go back and do more.
Upon graduating highschool I took a year off, to work two jobs- Then I was chosen to be part of the medical laboratory technician program at BSC. I was thrilled as only ...Expand for more
12 students were chosen at that time. I made the cut! Yeah........
I attended BSC for two years and did an internship at Q & R clinic. Where I ended up getting a job.
I still love Microbiology and would love to continue on in my studies, but my children need me more.
I am not bitter - Even with our struggles to help them recover nothing is more rewarding than seeing them regain the skills they lost and the smiles on their faces.
Workplace
I worked at St. Vincent's Nursing Home while in High School. From there I took a job at Best Buy in the jewelry department and a job with H.I.T. Inc. working with physically handicapped and mentally challenged people. I continued working both jobs to put myself through college.
Upon graduation I was employed with Q & R Clinic/Medcenter One. Where I worked for about three years in the laboratory before moving to Fargo to be with my husband.
I worked with two family pratice clinics in Fargo until becoming pregnant with our second child. By this time it was found our first child had special needs- and I have devoted the rest of my years, so far, to working with him and being a medical detective into finding out why he regressed.
Never did I expect my schooling and prior work experience would come into play in helping medically and theraputically with my children.
