Barbara's Story
Life
I grew up an insurance brat. Much like an army brat, we moved every two and a half years as my father moved up the corporate ladder. I was born in Houston, lived in Dallas, Norfolk, VA, Louisville, KY, Atlanta, GA, and North Andover, MA.
I often kiddingly say that I have lived a Forrest Gump life. I remember in Kentucky when prayer was taken out of schools. In Atlanta, I was there when Lester Maddox became governor (after chasing blacks from his chicken restaurant with a hatchet) and our high school marching band (I played flute) played for all the home games of the Atlanta Falcons. I loved going to the Varsity (world's largest drive-in restaurant) for mint chocolate chip ice cream before the games.
I lived in North Andover from 1967 to 1969. During that time, a classmate of mine, Ricky Bergman, played in a group called the Mad Monks Organ Factory. They played back up for a much larger group in which his older brother, Mark, played at small venues-the Doors. Sometimes they would practice at Ricky's house in the garage and in the summer, when all the windows were open, you could occasionally hear them practice. Their road manager, Vince Trainor, would once in a while, come by our dances at the Barn Theater in our town center. (I cannot imagine why he would, though!)
In 1969, I moved to Timonium, MD 2 weeks before school started. The first day, I ran into a girl that I knew from school in Atlanta, Meredith Green. The world gets smaller every day.
After college, I worked in the jewelry business as an appraiser and then eventually for T. Rowe Price as assistant to one of the Directors. During that time, I met my husband, Howard, and I left the work force to become a stay-at-home mother.
Howard and I have two sons, Evan (24) and J...Expand for more
ames (22). Both are working their way through college. Evan works as a surveyor and is studying to be a professional land surveyor-a 4 year program through Old Dominion University and will graduate with a BS in Civil Engineering. He got married in July. Jamie works full time as a landscaper and is getting married in September.
My husband and I are members of the first faith-based search and rescue team in the country. Our team is considered the top ground search team in MD and we teach law enforcement and provide services as incident command (we actually run the searches) for missing persons, specializing in Alzheimer's cases, locating weapons used in a crime, and providing evidence in murder cases.
For the past 15 years, I've been going to Ecuador on mission trips. I am part of a program called "Happy Feet" that takes shoes to children so that they can attend school. We usually take about 1,500 pairs of new shoes and socks each trip. Howard has been going to the mountains of Mindanao in the Philippines where it is mostly Muslim and they minister to the people there. It is the most life changing thing we have ever done. When you go to come along side someone just to help them in some way, to meet a need of theirs, it becomes difficult to tell who is blessed more, you or they.
After 18 years at home and homeschooling, I went back to work. Until last year, I was the Town Clerk of Charlestown, MD, a historic little waterfront town in Cecil County. Since then, I have been working for Perry Point VA Medical Center. I love it there because I get to interact with veterans and help them with medical issues. My husband owns his own electrical business and enjoys the freedom of working for himself rather than for someone else.
Life is good.
