Barbara's Story

Gee, where to begin. I love people and meeting new people. I was in touch with lots of friends from Newtown HS and that makes me very happy. Along with loving baseball, football and surfing (from my youth), I love to read. I have a long hair Chihuahua named Chachi. So, he's got me walking every day. I love cross-stitching. It's interesting to see the pictures kind of come to life. I'm presently attending Suffolk Community College and my goal is to get my Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. I have quite a ways to go since I have a job during the day and go to class at night. When I was in grade school, I wanted to be an English Teacher. In Freshman year at Newtown, I took a Home Nursing class and wanted so much to be a registered nurse. My parents couldn't afford it so I stayed in the business world and became an Executive Secretary (something I never expected). I do love to type. I also love good music. When I worked in Equitable Life, I was taught to play the guitar. I hated practicing. Today, it's a big thing. O.K., someday, I'll go back to the guitar. I really like the instrument. I also like the piano. You know, whenever you go to a party, there is always someone who tinkles the ivories. I love standing around a piano and joining in with song. I'm not agressive but when I get stressed out, I take a trip to the beach and watch the waves crash against the shore. It's really a calming thing to do. I grew up in Maspeth, Queens and attended St. Mary's School in Winfield (at the time). Now, since the zoning was changed, St. Mary's is in Woodside. When I was married in 1973, we bought our first house in Elmhurst. After our 2 sons were born, we needed more room. So, hubby decided we needed to move to Long Island. He felt that the schools were better and the boys would get a better education. Well, hubby passed away 10 yrs ago on Christmas Eve. So, it's a happy and sad event. Gee, the person I'd love to see from my past (I'm too shy to divulge). You know, in school, we were all so small and in shape. I was very active in ...Expand for more
after school sports (gymnastics and volleyball). I played softball for AC Nielsen (catcher) just to stay in shape. Met John in Sept. of 1972, married in May 1973 and started a family in March 1976. Yes, I did put on the pounds. I'm presently doing a lot of walking (going from car to the job and car to the school building). I don't care. This weight is coming off. I want to hit the beach again. OK, I won't be Gidget anymore, but I'll feel much better and healthier. If I could see one teacher again I'd love to see Miss Ryan (my guidance counselor). She was a typical lady and taught us how to be perfect ladies and gentlemen on the job. First impression is so important. If I won $100 million, (without a doubt) I would take all my friends from school and spend a day at the Waldorf, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and Radio City Music Hall. If anyone has other choices, I'm all for it. I love having fun. Some of the money would go to NYPD, education and St. Mary's Church and St. Adalbert's School. My best frient would tell you I'm a very happy person, always smiling. Let's face it, we all have problems in our lives, but yet I still smile. My son Tony says it doesn't take much to make me laugh. True. One thing I'll never forget is when I was 16 years old, my best friend Liz told Dominick (Randy and the Rainbows)that it was my birthday. He said no kidding. So he approached me and kissed me on the cheek. Ohhhhhhh Randy. Another birthday - when I was 22years, I was at a Disco with my best friend Liz. I shocked a guy I was kind of seeing, Bobby. He asked Liz who her friend was. Liz said it's Barbara. You've been taking her to dinner every Friday night. Don't you remember her. Well, I was all dressed up (hair piece, dress and pumps). I usually wore Levi's and a striped sporty shirt with chukka boots. He was so shocked. Yes, he took me to dinner to celebrate. I'll never forget that time of my life. That's about it for me. There's lots more to add but it's 6:45 pm and I want to get home from work. Hope you all enjoy reading this.
