Barbara's Story

Life - I knew I liked being independent, but I didn't think I'd find it behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler! Yep! You heard me right! Been running the road and grabbing gears since 1983 when I got divorced (another long story) and started driving semi. I enjoyed the road, was good at my job and put in many hours in places not too many other drivers wanted to go! I even had my fill of teaching student drivers (never again)! In December of 1997 I was rear ended by another semi on the interstate and have been home ever since from a brain injury. Life hasn't ever been the same, and it's very difficult at times when your brain "overloads", and mixed signals get put in the wrong FILES! Oh, that can almost be funny! I know now that my faith in God and having a strong personality have been what's kept me going when doctors, attorneys, family and friends have all but given up. I knew in my heart that although it may have been "easier" to have died at the scene, I'm better off now because of this struggle. I'm still fighting the "system", but I think I'm finally WINNING (I finally won my disability)! I haven't lost ALL my marbles......YET! (at least not enough to totally act like a BLONDE)! I started a Web site back in 1999 with WebTV (I'd had it for about a year), and since then I've upgraded to a real "COMPUTER", so stop in and say "HI"! bjscloset.org Once I started, I just couldn't stop, so I've built a business building Web pages, and I love it! I also have links to other Web sites I've done if you'd like to check them out (stop by the Show-Me F100's truck club site), I think you'll have a great time there and don't forget to turn UP the volume 'cuz there's plenty of music to go around (works on IE only...Chrome blocks the music)! Drop by any time and enjoy your stay! (there are email links there too, so drop me an email and say "HI"!) I got married in 2002 to a great guy I actually met on the "internet"! Yes, you heard it right! It's a long story too, but you can read a bit about it on one of my links on the main page. (the AOL link) He loves to laugh and joke and even COOK!? (wow! A woman's dream)! And with his 20 year stretch in the military, I'm SURE he can put up with ME! Hugs and Kisses to the class of 1974 - from "Bright Eyes".....see ya! School - I hate to admit it, but basically, I enjoyed school! I didn't like the "clicks" that went on, especially with the people who had money. But most of the time I found that those who had more money were "shallow", and I really didn't care to hang around them anyway! I also found that those who were middle class like myself were more "trustworthy", and "honest" about themselves and those they hung around with. I've never been a "stuffy" person, so I could relate better with those who knew how to be honest, and didn't have so many hangups that they forgot how to enjoy "life"! I do wish I would have studied a bit harder though, and that I would have done more with history, as I really do like it, I just don't "remember" most of it! oops! Must be that "brain thing"! hehe! All in all, I think I enjoyed my music and art, and the English lit that I threw in the last year the most! I come from a family of musicians, writers, and artists, so what more would you want out of life? Hmmm! A Baby Grand maybe?! Oh, that'll come later! :) College - College? Hmmm, I think that's something that my parents might have wanted me to go to, but my college was the college of "hard knocks." I went out to find a job, make money and hopefully learn what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. That's where the truck driving job came in handy. I loved it! It was hard work and I had to "study", just not like you have to study in college. So, call it "on the job training!" I didn't get a "grade" on my work, but I sure got a lot of "experience!" I don't mind at all. I can't think of a better way to spend some of the best years of my life. I learned about experiences most people only see in books and movies. I actually got to "live it", and that's always a good thing.......at least in my class! Workplace - Oh, the infamous "work history!" ouch! Well, I think the best way to describe mine is to tell you I've done it all, seen it all, and have mastered NONE! I've been a secretary, worked on lathes, delivered car parts, worked construction, driven dump bucket, driven a cab, worked for a blind girl (2 actually), played in 2 rock bands (including playing for a Northeast Prom '76?), driven a semi over the US and eastern Canada, and lastly, I do Web pages and have a couple flea market booths where I "try" to make some pocket change! I've recently added being a Scentsy Consultant to that list and I'm loving it (you can find my Scentsy link on bjscloset.org)! Scentsy is a wickless candle company that is growing by leaps and bounds and I'm honored to be a part of it. I'll be 61 this year (2017) and I think the first thing I want to do is say: "Wher...Expand for more
e's my SENIOR DISCOUNT!?" ARGGHHH! That number is creeping up quicker than I thought, but I'm not getting "older", I'm getting more "practice!" I've enjoyed my life, and don't regret a thing.....well, maybe a "few" things! Since my truck wreck Christmas of 1997, not working because of a brain injury has most likely been the hardest thing I've had to face in my life. It's not like a broken arm that gets better. You have to struggle each day just to stay "sane" in a crazy world! Living with a brain injury can rob you of so many memories. I'm a lucky one and remember most of mine (at least most of the "old" memories)! Things change from day to day, so, I do what I can "when" I can, and I pray that tomorrow will always be better! I look the same (thankfully) but the 'innards' don't always work the way I'd like them to! I started my Web site when WebTV allowed us to make them (summer of 1999). I saved every link that I had found on the internet to inform those with brain injuries about what they could expect from their injury, and also what they could "learn" as time goes by. I have my own email support group for those of us who are considered "high functioning" BI'ers, and own another International support group strictly for those with a BI (brain injury). Since I started my web site back in 1999 things have grown to where I have my own business building Web pages (mostly Non-Profits). Out of boredom at 2am in the morning, I started a Web site for the Ford truck club here in town that my husband and I belong to. (even though I drive a Nissan 4X4) I was voted in as "Public Relations/Editor" because of it. I send out monthly newsletters to our members, do all flyers and mailings for the club, and do all public relations work for the truck show that our club puts on every second weekend in July in Branson, Missouri (basically, I plan the show). Oh, there's never a dull moment around this part of the world, that's for sure! Military - I haven't been in the military, but I've hauled many a load of explosives and small arms for the military (can't tell you or I'd have to kill you), and highly explosive materials to a city in the middle of nowhere for private customers! I've had armed guards not only placed in my truck, but had one follow me around in a "nuke plant" where you're never without an armed guard beside you. But they DO feed you a good meal if you have to stay on site all day! I've been on a dock over a mile into the Atlantic ocean waiting for a battleship to come in to offload the bombs they had left over. This dock was so large it held 50 trucks out in the ocean, had a 30 foot "roach coach" there to make us fresh cooked food, and when the ship came in we had enough room to park 12 trucks side by side against their lift so they could load us. We took these loads to different places in the US to dispose of......one of my loads went to Yuma where I watched a civilian drop the pallet of bombs while taking them out to a holding area! Boy, you could hear them screaming at this poor guy way up by the docks! Good thing he wasn't a military man or he'd have lost some stripes or peeled spuds for months! :-) These were aerial bombs, so no worries.........unless you have a 9-volt battery that is (that's another story)! I've seen military bases in the middle of places you would least expect, and when some of the wars were going on I would double up with a driver to run 24 hours a day. I've even dead headed over 900 miles to pick up a load to take to the ship! Now that's some truckin'! If you knew some of the things that the military hauls down the interstates, you might think twice about following a big truck too closely! Oh, and if you see a placard......you know that sign that has a flame or other explosive looking picture on it......STAY BACK! It's really a good idea! :-) You get one do-over. What do you do differently? - EVERYTHING! This is an easy one 'cuz I've already been given that "do over" December 24, 1997, and it's been quite a roller coaster ride ever since! (yes, I'm smiling)! The simple things that we take for granted seem to be the hardest things to learn again. Not because they're so hard to do, but because those things were learned at a young age and were so natural that you don't even give them a thought anymore. Simple things like taking a shower, combing your hair, boiling water, walking, talking and just remembering who you are. Oh, the list goes on, but the WAY we do things have to be different because those simple things were learned at such a young age....we've forgotten many of them. We over think ourselves too much and I think that's what makes our children so special. They don't add all the "baggage" to things like we do as adults. So, YES, I'd do EVERYTHING if I had that do over, and since I'm still learning I guess I just have to continue, learn and keep hoping that I'm leaning in the right direction! Thank You Lord for that rare opportunity! :-)
