Barbara's Story
Life
Hello everyone,
After high school I headed to SJState. I lasted a year and then headed to work as a telephone operator with Pacific Telephone way back then.
I was married to David Hillhouse from 1970-1997. We had 4 children Michele 37, Shanon 35, Patrick 30 and Ryanne 28. We have 14 grandchildren but have lost contact with 3 of them. We have a new great grandson-Aiden who arrived on July 1st. My son was in an 8 yr relationship and I consider his s/o's children my grandchildren, too. The two he is raising are the 2 they had together. They have moved back here to Iowa...last December & are living with us. However they will be moving to their own apt on Oct 1st. My son soon works 2nd shift for Con Agra and I have the kids from about 5:30p - 9pm awake and then they go to sleep - hopefully.
My husband and I split in 1997.......my mom passed away in 1998 and I became the proverbial basketcase. I had decided to move to Iowa in 2000. I have relatives here and I wanted a change. Through mutual friends I met John. We were together 2.5 years and then married in 9/02 in a courtroom in downtown Omaha - in shorts and jeans. We came out to CA in 6/03 and we reaffirmed our vows in the Methodist Church in Rancho Cordova, CA. Our family and friends were able to join us.
John has 3 children Lenelle, 31, Andrew, 29 and Benjamin who passed away in 2005 at the age of 25.. He died in 2005 of natural causes. A very sad time for us. The year before in 2004 John's daughter presented him with his first grandchild Elayna - soon to be 4. John was widowed in 1999 and I have been priviledged to be Elayna's Gramma.
I have not worked for 8 years and still can't get used to all the free time....Expand for more
I know that there are those of you out there wishing for some free time. I am becoming limited in my physical activites. Two surgeries in one year plus extensive oral surgery.
I have experienced many things here in the midwest that I never would have in CA - HUMIDITY - that I can do without :) . HAIL - big stones.....lots of thunder and lightening storms in the spring and summer that spawn tornadoes now and then but many this year....and deadly, destructive ones. We were not in the path of any or invoved in the Iowa flooding. We are very lucky in that respect.......winds at speeds over 75mph that have made me think I was on my way to Kansas and straight line winds a new phenoma for me. They are wild and scary. I doubt you will ever get me back to CA to live.......tooo much traffic. I have to laugh back here when they are claiming there is a traffic jam on I-80.
My daughter Ryanne is at UCLA to get her Master's Degree in Teaching. She has a year left to gradyate but is allowed to teach this year coming up as part of the program. She is now a 4th grade teacher. Boy that makes me feel old. She took a trip to Korea in June. She must take after her dad because I don't have that much of the want to try new experiences and go to foreign countries.
High School was the best time of my life and I hope we have another reunion soon.
I have 2 adopted 1/2 sisters....one has had a lot of troubles in life including 6 babies that all ended up in county care. Shanon the younger of the two does her best to support her son as a single mom.
It is amazing that after 50 years that I am still in contact with many friends and after 42 years am still in contact with alot of high school friends.
