Barbara's Story

Life My Spouse My girlfriend Barb and I(yes,TWO Barbaras!) were teaching fifth and fourth grades respectively at Spruce Street School in Lakewood, NJ. A new fifth grade male teacher arrived, and we dated a few times. Deciding that we would make better friends, he and Barb began an 11 year dating relationship! Richie explained he had a childhood friend who was just out of bootcamp, and would I be interested in a "blind date?" Needless to say,it was "love at first sight" ~ meeting at the end of January and marrying that December. Randy was sent on deployment in March to a then little-known island called Diego Garcia in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean for eight months. He proposed to me via telegram on Mother's Day. The Navy sent him home sooner than planned, so we were engaged on October 7th and married December 11th at Cathedral of the Air at Lakehurst,NJ with Barb as my Maid-of-Honor and Richie,Best Man. Thirty-plus years later we're still together. (My first "blind date" was a winner!) My Kids Our son JR (for Randy, Jr.) served five years in the Seabees and is currently a reservist. He has a daughter, Ashleigh who lives with her mother in Mississippi. He is also currently the Fire Chief of Parkertown Volunteer Fire Company, and he recently bought a Harley "Fat Boy." Our daughter Janna has been married for three years. Both are a source of pride and joy to our family. My Job I can honestly say that I don't consider what I do a "job." I belong to that group of people who truly enjoys doing what they earn money to do. I've taught for a total of 20 years taking a 15-year hiatus to raise my family. Two years in sixth grade and eighteen in...Expand for more
fourth have been quite an experience. In September of 2002 I'm going to experience fifth grade! There is so much "good" in education that it really frustrates me when I hear people mentioning only the "bad". To them I say, "Come join me for a week and then we'll talk." I'm b-a-a-c-k in fourth grade (2003)and loving it even more. I still am looking forward to "retiring" in four years, though. Truly, I don't want to stop living, just having to deal with some of the administration and the parents!! I may be able to inform everyone fairly soon on my imminent permanent retirement. My husband and I have been working on a business enterprise which should come to fruition in the very near future. As soon as it does, we're on our way to Cooperstown, NY to build our last home. 2007 Well, all that hiking, dancing, biking, and horseback riding, not to mention teaching, etc., has taken its toll on my knees. I'm scheduled for bilateral total knee replacement on April 16th. I'll be out for the rest of the school year. I will only have until the end of February of 2008 before I "retire" anyway, so it's not too bad. Then Randy and I can tour the country without having any schedules to keep! By the way, our second grandchild is due in late June; our daughter and her husband are expecting their first. I can hardly believe that we have 11 years between grandchildren!! And we've decided to stay in Jersey for our retirement. I mean, having been to quite a few different states in this country, we sometimes have a hard time finding "familiar" food like pork roll and cheese or a really good Italian hot dog!!! Jersey may be small, but she DOES have it all.
