The wooden ladders give access to a square kiva--meant to fool the Spanish who forbade Native worship.
Only 15 people live on the mesa full time now... most families are scattered through out the valley below. The formations of rocks all have names--such as turtle rock.
This church was begun in 1629 and finished in 1640. Despite the unspeakable crimes perpetrated against the Acoma and other native tribes by the Spanish, there is a 70 percent number of people who are Catholic.
