Richard's Story
After high school I joined the Florida Air National Guard in the summer of 69. In 1971 I moved to New Orleans for about 1 years to work on jets . My friend Glen Smith talked me into applying to be a firefighter for the City of Jacksonsonville. My first wife was a girl from Jackson High, we were married for 3 years .My second wife was a girl from Paxon High that I dated my senior year, we have 2 sons (they are now Lieutenants with JFRD, one is in Rescue and the other is assigned to Hazmat Team). After a few years on the job I made Lieutenant and I was assigned to the Regency station for 6 years. At that time I built a house on Lake Asbury where my sons could ski, fish and enjoy their friends. I was appointed by Governor Graham to serve on a taxing district in Clay county. I was promoted to the rank of Captain and was assigned to Station 10 by Lee High school for about 2 years before being transfered to a station where I studied for the position of ...Expand for more
District Chief. I was promoted to District Chief of Administration in Fire Headquarters for a year. I was then appointed by Mayor Ed Austin to the position of Division Chief (City Fire Marshal),where I served for 3 years. After being Fire Marshal I was assigned to Fire 3 District Chief for a short time before being promoted to Battalion Chief an assigned to Fire Station # 1 for 7 years. In 2003 Mayor John Peyton asked me to become the Director/Fire Chief for the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department . After 34 years with the department I retired for health reasons. Many of Jacksonville Firefighters attended Ribault High School, they are a dedicated group of men and woman doing their part for the Citizens of Jacksonville. Now that I am retired I am having fun with my children and 5 grand children and 2 great grand son. I am a very blessed man for having a great life. I worked hard and played hard, love to hunt in South Carolina.
