Barri's Story
I'll try & make this sort & interesting.
1965-1971-After graduation moved to CA and worked for KMART, Sears & PX at MCAS Tustin. Was engaged once to a Marine.
1970-1976-Moved back to Chery Point worked for PX & credit union. Engaged twice, married once moved to Allentown, PA with 1st husband. Divorced about 6mo later & moved to Sanford FL, where parents had retired. Worked for Finance America doing loans for trailers.
Nov 1976-Aug 1977-Joined Army, basic at Ft. Jackson, SC miserable weather, bad feet and at 10 yrs older than other recruits. Daddy offered to send me a bus ticket home when I said how bad it was, but I stuck it out. Was picked up for word at the White House Communications Agency. Did my MOS(job training phone switchboard)at Ft. Gordon, GA. There were 12 other White House Communications trainees there only 10 of us made it to the White House after security clearances.
Aug 1977-Apr1982-Worked phone switchboard at the White House handling Presidential call, staff calls, Air Force One calls and emergency alert operations. I was there for Carter & Reagan. The 2 most exciting things were working when Reagan got shot & placing a call to Tom Selleck for Mrs. Reagan.
Apr1982-Nov1987- Worked at Camp David
doing the same thing as in DC.
The 10 years I spent at the White House I got to travel on Presidential trips US & overseas. I was on Carter's peace trip to Israel and was in Jerusalem. I also traveled to Canada, England, Brazil, Korea, Italy, and about 40 of the 50 states.
Dec 1987-Dec 1996-I was in the real Army and went to Heilbron, Germany and what a shock. In the ten years at the White House my MOS was changed to include string wire to connect all the phones & radio systems on a tactical site. I was a SSG(E6) and didn't know what a Duce & 1/2 was (2 1/2 ton truck), MOP gear(chemical protection suit) or how to march.
Met a soldier & got married and had a
dear Jane letter one month after. Got a divorce when I returned from Germany in 1992. He couldn't get a divorce as long as I was overseas & wouldn't give him one.
I went to Desert Storm Dec 1990 instead of rotating back to states(Stop/Loss program). Returned to Germany Apr 1991. My family & friends made sure I got plenty of mail. Parents, aunts, cousins,friends Nancy Bowers & fellow workers,Louise Krizan & Kathy Angel & da...Expand for more
ughters. I got more mail than any one else in my unit. At Christmas I had one whole mail bag to myself. My platoon was at a stationary location & did not see any action at all. Best thing was I lost 40 Lbs while there.
In May 1991 I rotated back to Ft. Bragg, NC. I was so afraid I would have to learn to jump out of plane as Ft. Bragg is mostly airborne units. Thank goodness I didn't.
In Feb 1994 I got orders for Korea. My first duty station Camp Stanley was supposed to be were the MASH unit was located that the TV series was based on. I was transferred to Camp Casey after a few months and that was near the North Korean border. While there I met my 3rd husband,Ken, a red neck, backwoods, Democrat from Alabama.
In Mar 1995 I went to my last duty station Ft. Gordon, GA. It had changed a lot since I did my MOS training in 1977-78. Ken went to Ft. Benning, GA and we visited back & forth. When I retired Dec 1997, I decided to stay in Augusta and when Ken retired he moved here. I took him 4 yrs to convince me to marry him but I gave in and married him in 2001. I always say it is a good thing we found each other because no one else would put up with us. He is about 95% perfect, the 5% exception is because he a die hard, they can do no wrong Democrat.
After retiring in 1997, I worked for several apartment complexes in Augusta as a leasing agent & them as a manager. I attended Augusta Tech on the GI Bill, taking Office Management on & off till the GI Bill ran out. In 2005 I quit working and am completely retired. Ken works as a tuck driver for a waste disposal company(garbage) and we spend our time traveling and taking care of the house.
About every 3 mon I go to Raliegh to visit my sister Lauren. She is single, retired from management at KMART and now is in management at Steinmart. Our baby sister Kandy live here in Augusta & is a 2nd grade teacher.
I have attended several reunions and highly recommend it. Even if you didn't graduate, Lauren, Nancy Bowers & Louise Krizan didn't & they come & have a great time. I doesn't matter if you were a mover & shaker or on the bottom rung, everyone just enjoys seeing how every one turned out. overweight, balding, wrinkled, grey or whatever it is always fun. It is also amazing to see how the area has changed.
