Barry's Story
PERSONAL
Married Diane J Prasil in 1963. We have three daughters.
We have six granddaughters ranging in age from two weeks to 12 years.
(The second youngest is five years old.) We also have one grandson,
six years old.
I am mostly retired, going in to work one or two days per week. Diane
is retired. We have a house in Galveston (a barrier island in the
Gulf of Mexico near Houston) where we spend about half our time. Much
of the time in Galveston is spent with kids and/or grandkids.
I read a lot and listen to music (jazz and 20th century concert
music). I also swim and walk on the beach a lot, preferably with
grandchildren. For several years we have been spending a week or so a
year at Buffalo Natl River with our oldest daughter and her two girls.

Some Achievements
Developed methods for analysing the economics of cancer screening with
Dr. Lionel Coppleson.
Wrote dozens of statistical software packages that are being
redistributed at thousands of servers around the world.
Devised mechanisms for assessing the impact of cancer on mortality
without using the attributed cause of death (from the death
certificate). Cancer patients die from causes OTHER THAN CANCER at a
rate 41% greater than an age matched normal population.
Found a generation effect (or year of birth effect -- it is difficult
to separate the two) in sarcoma survivors with P53 abnormalities.
Successive generations have more cancer at earlier ages. P53 is a
growth regulating gene; abnormalities in the gene cause an increase in
cancer but the generation effect had not been previously reported.
