Barry Dalton:

CLASS OF 1963
Corpus christi, TX

Barry's Story

Life This is a shout out to all of my classmates that I knew at good old Flour Bluff High School. I want you to know that I taught Driver's Education for 35 years, and on every first day of class I would require all of my students from Flour Bluff to recite the Flour Bluff Alma Mater. We would sing aloud before the class and parents, from start to finish, the entire alma mater. They could not pass my class until we sang it together. Now, how is that for sheer dedication to my high school? I'm an old retired school teacher now. I'm still married to my beautiful college sweetheart. We will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary this coming July. I have two daughters and four delightful grandchildren. It is truly amazing to see Flour Bluff today, because the main drag looks very much like it did in 1963, but there are thousands of homes everywhere you look. There has been an obvious housing boom in the Bluff and on the island. The students at FBHS are refered to as Bluff Rats, and the entire school district is bursting at the seams, It seems like everyone wants to live in the Bluff so that their children can attend our wonderful schools. t I may have achieved during my life. I need to tell you of an experience I had in 1995. I have always wanted to go back and thank my teachers for what they had given to me, and how thankful I was for their gift of knowledge and guidance. So, I found out where Ms. Aven and Ms. Claypool were living. I called them and went to their home. I cried my heart out and told them how grateful I was that they had shared a part of their life with me. A year later Ms. Claypool had died. Ms. Schroyer was in a nursing home, and Ms. Aven was living with a relative. Ms. Aven just celebrated her 100th birthday! I attended Old Dominion College in 1967 and Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas in 1968 thru 1972 earning a BA Degree and a Masters Degree in Secondary Guidance and Counseling. I served in the United State Navy for 4 years as a student pilot weather forecaster. Upon returning to the states I worked as a Psychological Associate at Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1977 I became an Associate School Psychologist for the Corpus Christi Independent School District, From there I went into teaching and counseling as a career that would last for 28 wonderful years. I am 75 years young now, and I live just a few blocks away from dear old Flour Bluff High School, It is always on my mind and forever in my heart.
