Barry's Story

Life I joined the U.S. Navy after graduating Phoenixville Area High School in June of 1981. I completed bootcamp in San Diego in November 81 and transferred to Florida. I was an Honor Graduate from Cryptologic communications school in Pensacola FL, then reported to NSGA Kamiseya, Japan in March 82 for my first duty station. I worked primarily as a Technical Control Communications Supervisor and traveled all over Japan and enjoyed playing live music with my friends and my first band, "BAH and the Fish". Made some lifelong friends there. In 1985, I transferred to the warm weather of NSGA Hanza, Okinawa. I worked as a communicatiions supervisor and computer Systems Manager. I really enjoyed the great beaches and pursued music with another band called "Whisper Alley". In November 86, after completing TACINTEL school, I went to Yokosuka, Japan onboard the USS BLUERIDGE (LCC-19) as a member of the ship's cryptologic staff. I was a shipboard supervisor during this tour and advanced to CTO1,. I visited over 20 foreign ports during that time, my favorites being Thailand and Singapore. In January 1989, after over 7 years in Japan, I received orders stateside and was assigned as a Cryptologic instructor at Corry Station, Pensacola, FL. I earned the designation as a Master Training Specialist and was the 1990 NTTC Instructor of the Year. I loved Florida, travelled all over the south and played in fun little band called "The Scoundrels". I then to...Expand for more
ok orders to Direct Surface Ship Support, NSGA Rota, Spain in March 1992. While deployed onboard the USS COMTE DE GRASSE (DD-974) I was selected for Chief Petty Officer. While ashore in Rota, I met my best friend, the love of my life and partner, Carla Jean. She was also on active duty in the Navy, and we were married on 18 September 1993. I was lucky enough to play with a very successful rock band called "The Shattered" and we were featured in Newspapers and Magazines in Europe. I then was transferred to NCD Cheltenham, Maryland in January 1995. Within 9 months, base closure forced a reassignment and I moved just down the road to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington DC (Suitland, Maryland actually). I served as Communications Chief during this tour and enjoyed visiting friends and relatives in the states. In January 1999, I reported to NSGA Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico where I was assigned as the Information Technology Officer. I was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer in April 2000 and also served as Command Webmaster. I had a nice little band down there too, called "Spaz", we did a lot of alternative and classic rock. I retired from the US Navy on 30 Sep 2001 and now work as federal employee for the Department of Defense as a communications officer for the US Government at Fort Meade, Maryland. I enjoy spending time with my wife Carla, we love to travel, I still play guitar, enjoy a good martini and hanging out with friends.
