Barry's Story
Life
I was class of '72 and lettered on the LHS soccer team. Carrollton Elem., USA, 60-62, Margaret Brent Elem., USA, 62-64, Menwith Hill Elem., UK 64-67, Charles Carrol JHS, USA 67-68, Lakenheath SHS, UK 68-71, Parkdale SHS, USA 71-72. Boy Scouts at Menwith Hill. Got to camp all over Yorkshire w/Army equipment in rain and snow. Shelter-halves are a lot of fun when it is cold and wet. At LHS, I remember going to Europe to play on the soccer team at other American bases. We always went by ferry through Amsterdam; what a blast! I remember going to Rome on the Easter trips with dozens of other American kids from Lakenheath and London Central. The dorm provided a bus for trips to London. A bunch of teenage, American brats cruising London! Does anyone remember going to Kensington Market? We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner together. We gathered on Thursday nights for the dance. After school there were always friends at the base snack bar (with the jukebox) or the dayroom. Ah, the dayroom! Our giant lounge, pool hall, dining room and dance hall. Everybody went to the football and basketball games -- everybody! We even went to the wrestling matches. The whole high school lived, studied and played together. Were we lucky or what? Remember how class would stop for a few seconds as the KC-135 or a group of 3 F-100s would take off? I remember sitting out in the field at the end of the runway with a Schlitz(!) beer watching the Dutch or German F104s land with sparks! At night trying to sleep with an F4 (from Alconbury?) throttling its engines up and down made a very ghostly sound. Sunday mornings there would be a giant card game (hearts?spades?) upstairs in the TV lounge. I bet there would be a dozen kids playing or watching. In '68 they would inspect your room with a white glove in the morning, but by '71 I don't believe they did more...Expand for more
than make sure there wasn't a mess. We took a military bus home only on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. When we stopped in Alconbury, along the way, we'd get a case of beer at the Class VI store. How did we get away with that?!! I'll never forget my 3 years on the Yorkshire Moors and my 3 years in the 7-day dorms on Lakenheath Air Force Base. Senior year in States, no friends, no car -- what a culture shock! The kids went to school and then they went home. Studied hard enough to avoid the draft and go to college, but I missed the draft by 1 year. I worked for a NASA contractor 33 years, retired and worked for one NOAA contractor for 2 years and am currently working for another NOAA contractor -- weather satellite stuff. I'm a programmer. I married late in life. My wife is Bolivian, but grew up in NYC. My son is 21, one daughter is 18 and the other daughter is 14. My kids love NYC! I've traveled all over the western states -- either in a tent or a hotel or sleeping on the hood of my car watching the stars. I visited all of the big and a few little national parks out west. Missed the Mt. St. Helens eruption by 10 days (young 'n dumb). Lived in Barstow, Calif. for a few years tracking satellites. Worked around White Sands, New Mexico a lot. Canoed Lake Opeongo, Canada 4 times. Been to Australia twice for several months and Jamaica once (stay away from the where the white tourists are). Traveled in Holland and Germany. Honeymooned in ... England -- and my new wife liked Harrogate over London -- hah! Had a bad car accident; helicopter saved my life. I own a '69 Triumph motorcycle. I love British bitters and listening to music, but the kids have ... well, you know. I'm nearly 70. Son graduated high school, one daughter starting college (class of '27), and last daughter starting high school. Geez, it is a young man's game!
