Barry's Story
Life
After Jamaica High, it was off to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for four pretty tough years as a math major. Somehow, I didnÂt get to spend a year strolling along the Seine as many of todayÂs college students do. After my B.S., I came to Washington to take a job in the defense industry. A nifty way to stay out of Vietnam, as the Jamaica draft board was grabbing everyone they could. In the evenings, I pursued a masterÂs degree in operations research at George Washington University. After that I still liked school so I entered the doctoral program, still working by day, studying at night. In 1978, I finally wore my cap, gown and hood and became the academic type ÂdoctorÂ. By then, I had also switched jobs to the Environmental Protection Agency. I have now been there for 29 years, and have had some terrific assignments as a statistician for EPA. On the personal side, I married Debbie Rachlin, whom I met while she was working on her Ph.D. in psychology at American University. Even though I really didnÂt want to work on another dissertation, true love won out, and I helped Debbie on the statistical portions of the dissertation. So now we are a Âpair of docsÂ. If you saw the movie ÂGood Will HuntingÂ, you will remember the interaction between the mathematician and the psychologist. Welcome to our household! We live in Annandale, part of the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. We have three delightful children. Suzanne is a 21 year old senior at Duke studying foreign languages; Benjamin, at 18, has just begun the University of Miami and wants to major in business. Jonathan, our 17 year old, is attending Thomas Jefferson High School, a place more like Bronx HS of Science than good old JHS. Debbie has a small private practice, but her main job is a police psychologist for the Prince GeorgeÂs County (MD) Police. Gosh does she have stories. I hope to see many of you at the reunion.
