Barry's Story

Life Life is great. After graduation I enlisted in the Air Force where I spent 21 years of seeing the world and meeting new people. This is where I met my wife of 31 years. Although we have no children of our own we do have 4 grandchildren ages 15, 14, 8, and 6. I currently reside just outside of Atlanta but hopefully will be moving to the country in Alabama to be closer to the grandkids. Military Lackland AFB and Basic Training: Remember the 62 other boots in SSgt Valareel (SP) and A1C Kunkles flight from Sep 64 thru Oct 64 (the first 5 weeks of basic.) Keesler AFB: (Oct 64 to Apr 65) Remember being in the Chicken 83rd Student Sq and was in the last class to complete Basic Training by double shifting going both A and B shifts prior to starting school. Left Keesler on Good Friday 1965 headed for Nellis AFB, NV. Nellis AFB:(May 65 to Apr 67) Remember all the good times and the CSGp's softball team going undefeated with the likes of Randy, Tiny, Fred, Jackson, Blaylock, Gene, Tony, Whitaker and the rest of the guys. Mojave Softball tournement of 1966. Rooted so hard that I couldn't talk for two days. From there to CCK AB Taiwan. CCK:(May 67 to Jun 68) Remember the after duty singalongs in the barracks and then the trips to town to entertain and receive free drinks from papa-san in the bars of Bar Town. Also the Kamakazzi like cab rides to Taichung. The visit to the orphanage the Christmas of 67 help make it one of the bests Christmas's ever being away from home. Tan son nhut AB: (Jun 68 to Jun 69) Don't miss the long and hot hours of duty. This is the place where I learned the hard way how to play Ace/Ducy in the barracks. Also the midnight trips to the chow hall for leftovers. Nellis again:(Jul 69 to Apr 71) This is when I had my first lesson of coaching a kids baseball team. Although we didn't win many games, the games we won made me proud of my little 8 and 9 year olds. I also will not forget my catcher hitting a foul ball on the last game of the season and shattering my windshield. I replaced it by bu...Expand for more
ying my first brand new car. Taipei AS, Taiwan:(May 71 to Feb 73) Foundly remember the NCO club special Saturday night Steak house. Great meals at a very low price. Also being able to be part of the 1st annual NCOA dinner to help raise money to build a roof for the orphanage. Great people and a great assignment. Clark AB, PI: (Feb 73 to Sep 73) Rember the great bunch of guys who arrived from Viet Nam at the same time I did. The trips to town to Mama Brown's for a cool San Maguel 3 to 18% beer. Lowry AFB:(Oct 73 to Dec 74) Remember the great young kids that I had the opportunity to work with. Made the In and Out processing of the students as well as permanent party personnel a snap. Thank's guys. RAF Alconbury, UK:(Jan 75 to Jan 77) Enjoyed the location and the people I met. Rember the crazy Sat. nights at the Base Bowling Alley. Also rember the great times I had during the 75 and 76 football seasons. Maxwell AFB:(Feb 77 to Sep 82) This was a great assignment as this is where I met my wife for the last 31 years Betty. Also remember the after Laborday weekend trips to Panama City with the summer bowling league. Actually got to spend an extra day by winning the championship on one occasion. Thank's Clara for all your hard work. Springfield MEPS:(Oct 82 to Dec 85) This assignment gave me the opportunity to work with the other branches of service. A wonderful experience. It was also close to where I was born and brought up which gave me a chance to spend some time with my mom and dad. I am also grateful to the guys and gals that allowed Springfield to be the first MEPS in the Southeast Sector to do away with the dual test reporting system. Retired from the Air Force in Dec 85. From there on to new learning experiences. Learned how to develope photographs for a newspaper. Work a printing press, ran a In house print shop and many more exciting things. Currently am retired and enjoying spending time with my grandkids when time and travel permits. Also serving as an elected officer of our local VFW.
