J. Barry's Story
Life
After freshman and sophomore years at McLean High School in McLean, VA and junior and senior years at Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, NC, I continued on to the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA where I received a B.S. in civil engineering in 1968. After graduation, was commissioned as a 2LT in the Army as an Infantry/Special Forces Officer. Went to jump school and Special Forces school. Did the 13 plus months in Vietnam as a Green Beret living/operating with Montagnard tribesmen in the jungle covered mountains of northern I Corps (awarded Combat Infantryman Badge plus 2 Bronze Stars - one for valor and one for meritorious service). Completed four years of active duty. Got married in 1972 and had 3 children (all adults now). After I got off of active duty, worked in northern Virginia from 1972 - 1994 and stayed in Special Forces in the Army Reserves for eight more years retiring as a Major and Master Parachutist. Went to grad school at night where I got a masters in engineering administration from Ge...Expand for more
orge Washington University in 1979. Became a registered professional engineer (Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina, and Texas). Moved to Kansas City, MO in 1994 to work for the City of Kansas City, MO as the Director of Codes Administration/Building Official. Got divorced in March, 1997. Re-married on Halloween day, 1998 to a wonderful lady and my best friend, Iris. Took early retirement from KC in 2005 and moved to San Antonio, TX where I was offered a job working for the Planning & Development Services Department. Retired (this time for good) in March 2012. Iris and I live in the Texas Hill Country just west of New Braunfels, Texas and have a second home in Rockport, TX. You can usually see me down at Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, spinning Iris on the floor like a top or down in Rockport boating on the bay! We are very happy.... In January of 2022 God called my beautiful wife home. I miss her so much. I will be moving to Carriere, MS this year to be near my older son and his family. God bless you all.
